any chance the M14x will get a better selection in graphics cards and what is the max graphics card do you think it could use.![]()
-
probably not for a little while. Im guessing they will update it to a 6 series nvidia or 7 series AMD once the new intel processors are out likely in early 2012 in the m14x revision 2.
-
aww that sucks cause i see that the M15x is going obselite and i need a new lappy
and the m17x is just a bit to expensive for me

There's some speculation of a GTX 460M coming into the laptop. There's a pretty big thread on it in this subforum, somewhere.
Honestly, in my opinion, since it wasn't listed in the manual at all (like the 6970 was for the M17X R3), I don't think it will be a graphics card for the M14X. My guess would be that Alienware will just update the M14X in 2012 with Ivy Bridge and a better GPU. But this is all purely speculation, so no idea!
If you can, I would recommend waiting for Ivy Bridge at the end of this year =/ -
I doubt dell will be using anything else, people mention the 460 but due to diminished battery life due to lack of optimus I do not see it as an option. It is my understanding optimus and 460gtx are not compatible due to limited pci bandwith. Nvidia Kepler Gpus are suppose to be released 2nd half 2011 with 4-1 power to watt ratio over Fermi. That would be the only other card capable. Also Ivy Bridge is scheduled for the first half of 2012. So by the time they update and refresh it would probably be march next year anyways, and people will say wait for Rockwell.

Haswell will be the biggest performance jump from Intel I have heard.

should the rumors about the 460m keep someone from purchasing the m14x now?

Just wondering where do you guys get all the codenames from?
I obviously tried google and I get nothing, is there like a secret website you guys go to to get the code names and the info of the new processors that are coming out on the laptop community for intel?
Thanks in advance
-
I personally don't believe the 460m will ever be in the M14X. The battery life would be annihilated and no one would buy it due to conflicting optimus issues, right? Like mrbee33 mentioned, it will most likely be updated with an optimus-friendly "6 series nvidia or 7 series AMD" in 2012.
Even if you were to buy the M14X-R1 now, Alienware's have incredible resale value and I'm pretty confident an ebay sale will get you a good chunk of what you originally paid for, just like Mac sellers. -
codenames are all in wiki lol. Ive bridge, haswell, lol its the future processor from Intel.
As for an update... I don't think a revision will be out until Ivy Bridge has atleast been out for a few months... That means Maybe 8-10 months for an R2.
thats way tooo long to wait lol -
i agree with titan god, will the 555gt gfx do the job for WoW maxed detail, and metro? or will i need to overclock? if that being the case i'll learn how i'm sure i can find out how to overclock somewhere on here
-
actually overclocking for the m11x was possible via a simple bios option. Even I was able to manage it, so that officially means anybody can do it.
-
I'm sure it can handle WoW on high/ultra just fine.
Just remember that to maximize FPS in WoW, what I do is:
- Max Out Everything
- Disable VSync
- Shadows to Medium
- Windowed Mode (and make it full screen)
This allowed me to increase my FPS by almost x2.5
If the 460m I have can get 110 FPS doing quests and 75-80 FPS in raids/BG's on Ultra, then the 555m will be able to handle it all no problem, since I've been reading it's 15% weaker than the 460m (if that's true).
As for Metro ...absolutely not
The only laptop card that can handle it maxed is the M18X with crossfire (6970 x2) or sli (485 x2). Even a single 485 struggles @ 16 FPS on ultra setting.
You should be fine on medium setting, however

LoL at wow...
-
i like WoW
. and i just order'd my M14x like 5 mins ago :O
-
Nice! Congrats and welcome to the community!
Just a matter of opinion, I get bored with the grinding in MMO's. -
Ok thanks. I'll be ordering my m14x tomorrow then on aafes. And I'll be using it to play SWTOR
-
The odds of a 460M being released for the M14x are next to nothing. It's too big, uses too much power, and produces too much heat.
In any case, actually upgrading your system in the future will also be impossible (unlike the M15x and M17x) because the 555M is soldered onto the motherboard.
The 555M will only get you about 15-20% less framerates than the 460M in most games, if the benchmarks out there right now are accurate, so at the point where a 555M becomes obsolete, the 460M will also be obsolete.
Off topic, but you might want to keep an eye on Guild Wars 2. The developers are supposedly doing everything they can to kill off the traditional grind of MMOs. They say it themselves, the thing they hate about modern MMOs is the grind.
Whether they really will totally kill the grind is still to be seen, but I would recommend keeping an eye on it. -

There is no real speculation of the 460m coming to the m14x. The thread referenced is just wishful thinking.
I'd bet real money there's 0 chance of seeing the 460m in the m14x. -
hmm well that sucks, and i will check out guild wars 2 i guess friends say the 1st one was amazing but i never tryed it personally

First one was...okay. Some love it, some did not - it was a unique game at the time. It had some leveling blocks if you ask me..."You can only do this IF you have that..."
Based on the info they've provided - Guild Wars 2 will probably run very well with the 555. Hell, my R2 and it's 335m run Rift flawlessly at amazing graphics settings with no lag problems - I just got bored with Rift though. doh!
Good purchase on the M14x, I'm gonna pick one up once I can track down a good rep to work with. The two I've talked to so far with no help at all - one was downright rude. -
Yup, lots of them can be rude.
Keep in mind, they make 2,300$ USD per year to work in the Dell/AW contact center and work under constant pressure in order to put bread on the table. I'm sure well paid employees would be more cheerful and friendly, however that's not the case with sweat shop salaries
I usually try and be as diplomatic as I can, but sometimes it's best to move on to a new rep until you reach your target.
This is why they lie about 3GB being better in games and 3 years warranty required for AW service to work outside of the US. If they don't lie to make their quota and/or cut of the profit, they can't provide for both themselves and their families. It's a vicious circle and we only have Dell's exploitation of humanity to blame
-
That's really all they make?
-
This is why US based sales reps have more willingsness to cut prices.. They have a better pay scale
Space hampster.. If you're located in the US, I've got the contact info of two cool reps from 2 other NBR members. I've talked to both, but one is a bit more generous than the other lol -
Yup. I did a presentation about foreign wages last year and used India call centers as my flagship
@hizzaah
You got it! People that make enough money to live in middle class (food; some luxuries, etc.) are more likely to cut you a deal rather than those living in dumps with no savings and very limited food. -
not to mention, about 1billion people EAGER to have their job...
i went to india last december...its like china 20 years ago! -
I'm still playing it. I love it because any grind in it is completely optional. You don't need to grind to have top level gear, or to get to the top level, or to finish the story. And the PvP is excellent.
Very true on it being unique. It might be an MMORPG but all of the 'explorable areas' (with killable things) are instanced with a maximum 8 man party. That's one of the things they're removing with GW2.
As for how well it will run, the 555M will be fine. It's a DX9 game, and on top of that, they say themselves that they try and make the game so it looks fantastic even on lower specs. (That was one of the positives of the original GW, it would run on almost anything)
Yes. It's sad, really. But this is why virtually every big company has call centres in India and such countries; they can pay them significantly less. Believe it or not, in some areas that would actually be considered a very good salary.
It's come to the point where various companies in the UK actually advertise 'UK based call centres' as one of their main advantages.
