Does anyone know of an OSD mod for the M14X? Or would be willing to create one?
The current icons look pretty terrible...
EDIT: See this post.

On screen display.
The icons that pop up when you use the Fn - adjusting brightness, changing volume etc. -
Yeah, would love to see the modded version, because I still couldnt believe that the OSD of Alienware look that ugly, or is it Dell scrap the original Alienware version and put their ugly OSD version into an Alienware laptop?
Because my cousin got a Dell XPS 17" and the OSD on his laptop look exactly the same. -
oh so thats what the osd is! i thought it was the screen itself xd
-
Is there any way to get them from different computers? I kinda liked my G72 ones lol
-
I think it is simply a case of replacing the icons in the correct directory. I need to research it a bit more myself.
I'd make some but I'm terrible at graphic design and don't have a copy of Photoshop or anything similar.
If anyone can knock up a test image or two I'll gladly have a mess around with them. -
Because you can also use some from Google. -
I may mess around with this when I'm bored. I used resource hacker and looked through the OSD application (located in program files) and it seems pretty straightforward. Just need the time and patience now. If I come up with a new app/OSD I'll be sure to release it to you guys. Any suggestions?
BTW - No promises this will be done anytime soon. I promise I will try but I'm a full time student/programmer, work a full time job, and am getting married in a few months. I will promise that I will try to do this though. -
Can someone give me the location of the files? I have some Photoshop experience and I have CS5 and may be willing to give it a shot. Just too lazy to find where those darn files are at!
-
The images are embedded into the OSD executable in the \Program Files\OSD~ or whatever the particular directory is called.
I think you can extract/replace them using the program GIJoe mentioned Resource Hacker -
EDIT: Sorry for the quick reply, yes those image file are being embedded into that First file as seen in the picture. I might need somebody to create pictures of those OSD to test it, because I have no Photoshop experience or whatsoever. -
I want to look at using Visual Studio 2010 to see if I can do a nice quick change of the icons. Resource hacker displays the files fine but it's pretty challenging to get everything right for replacement with something new.
What type of OSD icons is everyone looking for? (style) -
-
-
how do you do this? and are there any more than the trackpad one?
-
WOOO i support you just morally :3
-
ouh this is very nice. thanks for the filesystem-link and the tool. maybe ill get myself up after sleep to work on that.
n1 mate! -
So I move on making the full modification - here is the screenie of osd in SCII-style
My next step will be making everything in another visual style, that is much more appropriate alienware style

I also wonder if there is any options to create visual mod for command center? -

There's a great set of images in this thread.

Agree with confused, great set...if somebody does all the work..I'd love for you to upload the on screen display app.
-
As requested, I have modified the executable with different volume, brightness, and video OSD pics.
You can download the file here: AlienwareOn-ScreenDisplay.zip
Instructions:
--------------
1) Stop the AlienwareOn-ScreenDisplay.exe (press ctrl-alt-delete and select task manager, and end the process)
2) Navigate to: c:\Program Files (x86)\Alienware On-Screen Display
3) Back up your original AlienwareOn-Screen-Display.exe
4) Replace the AlienwareOn-Screen-Display.exe with the one included in the link above.
5) Reboot your laptop.
6) Enjoy!
I have tested this on my m14x and the updated OSD content looks nice!
Thanks, and enjoy! -
Everything works great. Thank you for taking the time to do that.
To add or change your directions...
You do NOT need to restart your machine. After ending the AlienwareOn-ScreenDisplay.exe process in your task manager, you still replace the file with the new one (just rename the old one by adding "-Original" to the end or something. The change: Once you've sucessfully copied the new file, just double click it to launch the .exe and restart the process. The OSD will then function as normal.
Works perfect for me. Thanks again. -
Thanks so much for doing all the work!
It works great.

Really appreciate it. -
Look really nice. i guess the eject osd isn't included in the alienwareon-screen-display.exe?
-
It is in the .exe
