    Hi everyone.

I just wanted a genuine response of whether anyone has seen or experienced a 3840QM processor with an unlocked multiplier?

This means the bios is available with options normally associated with the Extreme processors i.e. overclocking - performance options, multiplier control for various core speeds.

Does Intel have control over the locking / unlocking or is it Dell / Alienware? Any information would be appreciated.

    Thanks

if a chips multiplier is locked you can not exceed the max multiplier, regardless of motherboard options. I have the 3820QM with an unlocked bios and can change the turbo settings to get higher than stock turbo speeds. personally I think increased turbo is almost as good as a standard overclock. my 3820 can now hit 4.1Ghz w/turbo after adjusting turbo settings. the only chips with unlocked multipliers for intel notebooks are the extreme edition ones that are generally around $1,000. keep in mind that cranking up the turbo as i have will push your temps up quick, so I wouldn't recommend it without first replacing the garbage factory thermal paste.

What bios version are you using, I have the A11 which came with the laptop. I'm considering downgrading to A10 to allow me to overclock the memory, however I am concerned that downgrading the bios may lock the CPU.
The problem with A11 bios is the memory overclock resets back to default after a reboot. The previous versions saved the memory overclock value permanently.

your CPU is already locked, regardless of whats being reported in the bios or what bios you are on. im on a unlocked A10 now I found on another forum site. unlocked as in bios options, i dont believe anything can unlock the cpu multiplier.
