I am trying to decide whether to get 8GB or 16GB of RAM for an M14x R2. I am concerned that 16GB of ram will generate too much heat and use too much power.

I am not certain I need 16 GB for running office, visual studio and games such as WoW, Diablo III and SWTOR.

    Thoughts?

You really don't need 16gb. In fact nobody does. Keep your money and buy yourself a ssd ;)

im running 16gb ram and i cant see any real difference in battery life or heat (i did take the ram cover off tho seemed pointless to me) not gonna lie its nice to see 14gb ram avaiable but i have yet to take it over 6gb used so id stick with 8 tbh.

if your looking for a big performance increase and you have the money go for 8gb ram and an ssd

16gb will use no more power or produce no more heat than 8gb.

As a former overclocking enthusiast, I can tell you with assurance that more memory does in fact use more power and generate more heat. In a high end desktop, that will definitely matter. In a lower power laptop, it may not be an issue.

You can use some for a RAM Disk, I have done that before, using a utility to keep all temp files on the RAM disk is cool, way faster than even an SSD. Try ATTO benchmark on a Ramdisk and prepare to get blowed away.

I was looking around and was thinking of upgrading the Hyperx 8Gb kit just like majority of the owners on this page when it was $75. I held off after purchasing a SSD.

I found one on ebay for $45 and it is nice to have a SSD and 8gb. Do it if you have the money!

16Gb is only needed if you want to run several virtual machines.

RAM does not generally generate heat or take more power input to run.

But I will say this, given the graphics card options available and the processors, 16GB RAM would probably bottleneck the computer a bit; or you simply wouldn't get the performance you paid for out of the extra memory, purely because you don't need it and won't use it, as the guys above me said. :)

I'd say unless you are planning on running virtual machines or some high end processing, 8GB is fine. I agree with some other comments - You'll get much better results from a SSD (after market) than an additional 8GB of RAM, if you are using it for mostly gaming and stuff.

ahah get 12. i did. nah but seriously i had the option of getting 12 for the specd machine that had 8, so my choice was made pretty quickly. i did find with 8 bf3 3 seemd to run out, no idea why. but i do use VM's as well.

@eats7 I want to add a120 SSD to my 750gb HDD too, but I own a m14x R1. How do you add the 2nd drive? do you remove the optical drive? Cheers

Gaah don't tell people this. I max out my 16GB on a regular basis. I wish I had 32gb as an option! Some people NEED buttloads of a RAM.
