Hi Guys,
I just got my M14x R2 last week and I've had this crash about 6 times. I have seen this posted randomly throughout other threads, but in other circumstances (the 64GB SSD thread---I have the 32 caching and I haven't touched it at all).
I have tried a couple clean installs of the Nvidia driver (from online and from the resource/restore disk), but it is still happening. It hasn't happened while gaming, but rather just when I'm surfing the internet. The first 5 seemed to happen after I came out of hibernate/sleep, but the last one just happened out of nowhere. Any help would be appreciated.
Could this really be the Nvidia driver, and I just have to wait for the update? (I know the beta doesn't work) Or is there something badly wrong with my computer?

A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: nvlddmkm.sys (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 296.16 , NVIDIA Corporation).

You might want to have a look at this thread: Sudden BSOD and Fail to detect GPU M14xR2 and here: Finally 650m Drivers, I think it is cause to most if not all, R2 users with the GT650M.

Make sure all your drivers are up to date and the BIOS.
Drivers and BIOS update
Go to the site and enter your Service Tag or Express Service Code to get the correct updates for your laptop.
Let us know if the problem persists... -
Thanks for the replies guys.
I think I've covered all of that. My drivers are all up to date and I've run alienautopsy as well (all good). -
My M14x has the same issue. Im sure it is the Nvidia driver because i have replace a motherboard already and the problems are still presented. If you can update the driver to 301.42, the problems would be solved because i have seen someone with 301.42 doesnt have any probs at all. But for me, I couldn't find a way to update to 301.42. I will let u know when someone show me the way to install 301.42
-
Including all windows 7 updates?
-
simple.. download 301.42 .. go to LaptopVideo2Go: NVIDIA & Laptop News
download the updated .inf file. install 301.42 and it will fail... but it extracts the install folders. Copy the .inf to the driver install folder. Re-run the setup and voila works fine. Im on 301.42... works fine. -
Thanks Tacyclo, that would be much appreciated. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I already had a DOA issue (got it exchanged), so I am really hoping to get this solved..
George yes I'm all updated.
Lancer - I will take a look at that.
Although Lancer I'm slightly confused. I thought we were talking about the beta 304.48 driver, what is this 301.42 thing? (sorry if that sounds stupid)
Edit: I see that Tacyclo mentioned it too--my eyes were blurring the numbers. Still though, I'm a little confused, and the download link for the modified INF file is not working. -
Mortiky - you need to right-click the link for the .inf file and choose "save as..." option. I've been using the 301.42 drivers with my M14XR2 for a while now, and also have had no problems.
-
ok i got the file, but I still can't get it to install---where exactly should I be pasting this INF file? I've tried every folder (after extracting the driver) but the installer still doesn't detect things right.
Edit: actually I got it to work now (I had to try a different download of the driver). I'm crossing my fingers that this is better now...Thanks to everyone for the help. -
Hey, I just received my M14x R2 today and I copied Diablo 3 from my server to my Alienware and ran it, it was working fine until I skipped the cinematic and the screen had some weird green things flashing then the game crashed saying that the display drivers have crashed. I also realised that when I open the "Adjust image settings with preview" in the NVIDIA Control Panel I get a blue screen.
EDIT: The game works when I run it using the integrated graphics, but not the GT 650M. Also, when I use the GT 650M there appears to be a lot of green dots flickering on the screen which leads to a display driver crash and a bluescreen sometimes. -

tried reinstalling the drivers? also tried bios update?
-
i tried reinstalling the drivers but not the bios update, I'll try that once I finish installing a fresh copy of windows 7.
I just finished installing all the drivers and updating the bios. The problem still didn't go away, I have a feeling that this is a hardware problem.
I get this same error and 301.42 doesn't fix it. -
For driver: NVIDIA DRIVERS 304.48BETA . For inf file: nvwi.inf . And mine is now working fine with 301.42
that happen to me too
@mortiky
Do a clean install by remove everything that has name "Nvidia" in it *EVERYTHING*. Then launch ccleaner to clean the rest registry. Restart the pc then install the driver but it will failed....but dont worry copy the inf file in C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\301.42\WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver , then install it again. DONE!!! but dont forget to uninstall *EVERYTHING* THAT HAVE NVIDIA NAME IN IT
