Does anyone know if the LCD panels that are used in the M14x R2 are the same as the ones used in R1?

Are you planning on purchasing a new screen? You should definitely contact a rep. for assistance with that. You may even get a free replacement.

Both of the models use different part numbers and even though they have similar specs, we don’t recommend to put a M14X R1 LCD on the M14X R2 or backwards. I have seen cases where the computer started having video issues after a wrong LCD replacement.

I was actually just thinking about trying to upgrade to the 900p screen on my m14x R2.. Would it probably not be a good idea to buy one of these: https://www.laptopscreen.com/Englis...p?section=products&model=M14X&brand=Alienware ? If it isn't, how can I replace the screen?! I've heard it's pretty simple to do...

The official Dellienware answer will almost always be "no". Use the compatibility guide at Screen Country and write down the actual manufacturer part number (not the Dell number).

I upgraded my r2 screen from the awful 768p screen to a 900p screen. Made a huge difference. If you are thinking of doing it, but are worried about damaging something, take it to a computer shop or friend who can do it. I got it from screencountry.com. Just did a search for compatible panels. Got one for the 14x, didn't list either r1 or r2 so I don't think that really matters. The matte ones were out of stock so I got a glossy one for $62. I followed a video someone made on youtube on how to replace the screen, just unplug the old one and the new one plugs right in. Only tricky part was along the bottom where the alienware light up logo is the screen cover had a really sticky glue holding it to the old lcd. it was really hard to get off and I got a tiny crack in the bottom of the plastic screen frame as I was going to fast to take it off. Anyways, it made a huge difference with the better screen, the low res screen is SO bad. The one I got is from AUO, I looked up the part # and it looks like some Sony VAIOs use the same screen. Screencountry.com won't tell you the manufacturer of the screen before you order it. I've had it installed for over a month, only problem I had is it has one stuck pixel that stays green. Didn't bother me enough to raise any issues or want to return it.
I attached a couple pics with the old screen out, and new one in. I doctored out my login image for steam since it was on the photo.
The one I got is part # B140RW02
Hope this helps -
RPM MX, did you have to replace the Ribbon cable when you upgraded your LCD, I'm wanting to upgrade my LCD from the 768p to the 900p as well.

You don't have to replace the ribbon cable but beware for dust particles when replacing the screen. That's what kinda keeps me off from replacing it with a 900p screen.
