From my understanding this is a limitation of the HD4000, it can only do built in and VGA monitor or Built in and HDMI, but not all three. In the video it's most likely a special attachment, or maybe driver mod.

    Edit

This is straight from his description:
Although I got three 3D monitors ASUS VG278H, my graphics card has only enough horsepower to run 2D via HDMI to HDMI, Mini Display to HDMI and a special USB3 adapter to HDMI).

So he bought a special adapter that plugs into usb.

With 2GB of GDDR5, I recommend two externals and the laptop display. With 3GB or more, I would say three is fine and should function without any negative effect on gaming.

You may be able to run three at 1080p, but I don't recommend it.

I don't plan to use three for gaming, I want to use three for productivity. I'm assuming that would be fine?

Yeah, I bet that will be okay. Not sure how good USB adapters are, though.

I have an AOC 16" external monitor that runs from one USB connection. Not very high resolution, but even off one USB 2 connection it can play at least 720p video, maybe 1080p video. There is also a larger version, and the latest 16" (not it stores yet AFAIK) runs with USB3.

Matrox has an external box that can drive multiple monitors, and is designed for use with laptops.

I haven't tried it but I assume that as long as it is for productivity and not gaming, it should be fine.
