awesome lol..3 hard drives,GTX 765M I don't care about the speaker area anymore.

Take away the DVD. Put in another heatsink with XM processor support with overclocking. Add 780GTX. Then the thickness becomes tolerable and it becomes an interesting alternative to the other 14inch gaming laptops. Right now this thing doesnt have the thinness of the blade or the cooling of the asus.
But kudos for the IPS Matte screen. It's so frustrating that they managed to almost get there. -

First 1080p 14" gaming laptop.

Whatever the price is, I now have to consider parting out my desktop entirely, selling my R2, and figuring out how to come up with the remainder for an R3... If the 765 performs like its claimed, then the R3 could probably be a rather viable desktop replacement...
My tower has an XFX 7970 Black, a Core i7-960 (yeah baby, first gen!), 6gb of ram, and 2 Samsung Spinpoint F1 drives.. I'd definitely take an R3 if it can perform at 75-80% of what my tower can do. As it stands, my R2 is very nice and quite fast but it doesn't hold a candle to the tower, primarily and likely only because of the GPU difference...
In regards to that video - I would have liked to have seen a dual exhaust solution for CPU and GPU and not run them both off the same heatsink. However, the metal frame and body should also act as a passive sink, though I wonder how hot it will actually get in the average gaming environment? -
Comparing the 660m to the 765m, how much of a performance jump do you guys think? Does the 765m cause a lot of heat? The m14x, seems to have only 1 exhaust so I hope there's no heating issues

It is limited by bandwidth, however raw compute power in glflops is roughly twice that of the 660m, twice the cuda cores, higher clock depending on cooling (can turbo 15% higher) not to mention a higher max power draw. Hence performance in games such as tombraider may double in fps whereas some games such as crysis 3 will barely benefit at all, overall should be in between a gtx670mx and 675m once again depending on cooling.

Too bad they didn't do a good job with the cooling system, according to a early review from Laptop magezine it still runs hot and loud which and with such a thick chassis is a total failure on DELL's part.
I'm out. -
Looks like the new M14x weighs 6.6lbs ouch and thicker than the R1/R2 and based on the laptopmag review, it suffers from uncomfortable heat and very loud singe fan noise .
You would think Alienware would learn something from what happened in r1/r2 and with a thick chassis and 6.6lbs, you would think they would improved the cooling and make the fan more silent or at least fit in dual cooling fans.
Well there is the Razer 14" but the lack of Ethernet port, card reader and optical drive ruins it for me, so It might be the MSI GE40 or the Clevo 13" -
Just had a look at ordering one, from the US and from the Canadian websites.
Interesting - you have more options when going through Dell Canada, at least for the 14" unit. You can select the processor, while the US Dell site does not give you that choice.
Neither site allows you to modify the amount of memory. Max they are selling is 16Gb. When you look at the "technical specifications", they only say 8Gb RAM. The tech specs are useless....I would like to know if 16Gb is max, or will it go to 32Gb?
Also, drive selections are very limited. On the US Dell website, there is no selection. On the Canadian Dell website, you have three choices. What I really would like is a large mSATA drive for boot, and a very large data drive - but you don't have such a selection. You can have a 750Gb drive, or a 500Gb drive with a 64Gb mSATA "cache", or a largish SSD.
All in all, kind of frustrating.....
One last thing. There is supposed to be a custom laser engraved nameplate on the 14" laptop, according to the info provided by Alienware.. However, no place are you allowed to enter text - there is nothing in the order process that mentions the nameplate.
And yet another one more thing - the BluRay drives are reader only, on the 14" and 17" laptops. No BluRay burners. Huh? -
