1.) The Noisy Single fan that cools both the cpu and gpu that sounds like a Jet Engine or Hairdryer w/ a noise level of 50+ decibels
2.) The Heat and throttling issue
3.) The Screen touching the keyboard showing vertical line marks that needs to be wipe everytime
4.) Some keys on the keyboard are squeaky

If they can fix all that on the new revision and put a minimum of GTX 760m or GTX 765m then we are in business.

    UPDATE 06-11-2013

Looks like the new M14x weighs 6.6lbs ouch and thicker than the R1/R2 and based on the laptopmag review, it suffers from uncomfortable heat and very loud singe fan noise .

You would think Alienware would learn something from what happened in r1/r2 and with a thick chassis and 6.6lbs, you would think they would improved the cooling and make the fan more silent or at least fit in dual cooling fans.

A full 1080p screen would be nice too.

    Just my opinion on this

The Macbook pro retina 15" is 2880x1800, even in that resolution(Windows 8 bootcamp) the only way I found to not burn my eyes trying to read such small letters was to use the zoom option set to 200%, problem is that some windows and texts looked weird.

Don't get me wrong i LOVE high resolutions, I just think software developers(both OS and programs) need some time to make sure they support these in a regular nice looking size.

Speaking from having an R2, I would like to see these physical changes in an R3

    Remove the following:

    VGA port
    Firewire port

    Move these:
Move network jack to where VGA port is now
Move HDMI port closer to new network jack
add an HDMI IN for things like game consoles - why not? some of us are on the move (military) and it'd be nice to be able to plug a console in
Laptop lock can be moved to the back of the system

    Add:
2 more USB3.0 ports on the right side, taking up the area left open by the move of the network jack
Additionally, for the love of God, please add 2 separate cooling systems - 1 each for the CPU and GPU... This time, use 3 or 4 heat pipes, not 2. Move the air intakes to the FRONT where the grills are at - they can still be made to light up and be made to draw air in.

Get rid of the glossy screen cover and add a high-quality matte-finish screen with a greater color gamut and 1920x1080 minimum res..

    As far as specs go:

Let's get the option of dual GPUs - Lenovo did it! They removed the optical drive in lieu of a second 650m GT. Some people don't use optical drives, or they have an external. In any case, a high-end mobile GPU should be standard. Hell, the R2 should absolutely have a 675m at least - why not? Why a 650? I personally would've paid a premium to get all the current (basically max) specs I have now in addition to something that would murder the 650m GT.

The RAM and CPU seem fine otherwis

m14x R2 doesn't have a Firewire port. VGA is usefull for connecting to projectors. IMHO better would be to dump both the VGA and HDMI and add a DVI connector. Can be used with adapters to connect HDMI and VGA, and allows connection to a 27" 2560x1440 or 30" 2560x1600 panel. I have a Dell WFP3007-HC that currently I can't connect my m14x to without an expensive active DP to DVI-D dual link adapter.

    HDMI in would be nice.

I don't like the glossy screen but I like it being covered by a plastic panel as this protects it a little, could use a matte plastic panel though.

Dual 650m would be pointless, a single more powerful GPU would be better, say a 760m. I'd much prefer this to a pair of weaker GPUs.

I completely get your point, were I to have a 3200x1800 screen (considered trying to get hold of one of the panels when the HP launches and seeing if it will fit my m14x R2) I'd probably run my desktop at 1600x900 still. Don't forget that you get perfect scaling (1 px = 2x2 px) so this won't reduce quality. For gaming, video, etc, it would be amazing though. You couldn't run Crysis 3 at this res but again you can drop down to 1600x900 if limited by GPU power.

If only someone like nVidia would introduce a graphics driver level option where the computer presented 1600x900 to the OS and used SSAA to then address all 3200x1800 pixels. Or Microsoft could do the same for Windows 8.1.....

Ah..Guess its mini USB or some such. At this time, a dual gpu 650m option would be pointless, but at the launch of the R2, it wasn't. I wasn't actually suggesting that the R3 use 2 650m, just pointing out that Lenovo did it, and so Alienware could do something like that with 700-series, or just stick to a powerful single-gpu option.

On the left there is a MiniDP port, perhaps that's what you mean? It's the only display connector that is attached to the nVidia GPU directly, and the ONLY way to connect the laptop to say, an external 3D vision display etc, so I wouldn't want to get rid personally.

I'd much have preferred (for the R2) a 670m or 675mx to two 650m cards.

Let's see if AW improved the single fan with a much bigger one with bigger heatsink. The issue here is that loud horror noise that went above 50+ decibels and sounded like a jet engine or hairdyer. If they can reduce the single fan noise then I'm fine not having dual fan cooling.

Personally, I like the idea of having a port that can contain an optical drive, or another hard drive, or some other component. In reality, given that these are a low volume product, I would not expect the engineering costs to be worth it.

In fact, I removed the optical drive from my 12.1" Fujitsu laptop a couple of years ago and replaced it with a second hard drive - running 720Gb of SSD for a very fast little system. There has been only one situation where I regretted not having the optical drive, and that was because my USB external optical drive failed. I can ALMOST count the number of discs burned on that laptop with the fingers of one fist.... :)

There seems to be an implication that the R3 will not have a lit keyboard. That is a deal killer for me - no lit keyboard, no buy. I find this far too useful when working in many situations - I DJ, and I do photo and video editing in odd (as in - not well lit) situations. A well aimed LED, such as some Lenovo have, might work, but I am not sure.....

For me, the following are needed to make it worthwhile:
    - newer nVidia video card from latest generation
    - improved cooling
    - 32Gb RAM max
    - good selection of high end CPUs
    - more ports that are current - USB3, etc.
    - better engineering in terms of not having keys pressed against the screen when closed, mechanical keyboard or very high quality keyboard
    - next generation WiFi, preferred 11ac
    - top quality IPS or equiv screen, regardless of resolution

For screen resoltuion, I would like to say 1920x1080 (or even better - 1920 x 1200!) but given the pi$$ poor way Windows handles changing the font size, I am not sure that 1600x900 isn't the ideal resolution for a 14" screen. I find 1920x1080 on a 15.6" screen to be very good, but if the characters were any smaller it would not work for me. I have been using a 12.1" 1280x800 screen for a few years, and it is very good and easy to read, but I would not want things to be any smaller on that screen.

Should there be a way to make Windows handle changing system font sizes and magnification really, really well - ONLY THEN would a higher resolution screen become a requirement.

These requirements are not outlandish - you can get close to every one of them on other laptops. Should Alienware put them all into one 14" laptop and keep the price reasonable, it should move a lot of units IMHO.

The new 14x has a lit keyboard (you could see it on the video that was leaked few days ago). That would have been very odd otherwise considering the current gen has one.

I currently have an Asus ux32vd with full hd 13.3" display and it is just the perfect size/resolution for me.

I'll wait to see the announcement on monday to decide but the new clevo w230st looks like a 14x killer to me.

I wonder if they will step the graphics at all since the 765M space is getting pretty crowded.

The picture was captured by Cloudfire from the video that leaked last week (which seems to have disappeared btw). You can see the letters on the keyboard are slightly lightning. No more lights around the keys though.

Anyway we will see about all that tomorrow :)

Same here, if you want portability to the max and have a damn slim thing, buy a netbook, a tablet or a hybrid or what else there is, but don't expect any high performance machines..
