I've owned the m14x for about a month now, and comparing it to the previous m15x, is it a valid successor? In my opinion, no. The m14x is more of a glorified m11x to me. It doesn't quite bridge the gap between the m11x and m17/18x. My main reason is the graphics card. Though I am happy with my purchase, the gt555m graphics card is found on laptops much more cheaper than this, and it is not much different from the gt540m. Don't expect it to run recent games maxed out with great expectations. The asus g53j that is somewhat cheaper than the m14x has a gtx card, much more powerful. But I love my m14x. Any thoughts?

Havent done a games test yet between both systems but in the process of doing that. Working on the general stuff right now, quality, display, typing, portability, battery life, the general stuff. System is definitely lighter with greater battery life without throttling down.
Honestly the m14x is a new product not intended to replace the m15x. m17x r3 is a easier comparison that fits (same size, weight, display **slightly larger, graphics card power). -
Portability ok so so !
But Dell could made an extra effort, wish they did not.
Even do i love it, but it has LAGS
My Asus feels much more smooth so far! -

The M14x is a 14" with the size of a "normal" 15", the M15x is a 15" with the size of the M17x :/

I wish Dell would've made it 14.5 inches with the same thickeness and all that. It wouldve been abetter median. And a better GPU wouldve been nice :c

Btw, here's some pics on another thread between the 2. Makes the m14x look like a netbook!

Yes, after looking these pics you know why the GPU is weaker, and you know why the M14x is portable and the M15x isn't.

i say yes. runs great, i love this laptop

JK, probably means not as powerful as his G53 -
I've had both an m11x and m15x, now an m14x, in my opinion the m14x is way closer to the m15x than the m11x. Overall performance seems very similar . . . yes, the GPU is on paper 20% slower, but the faster CPU architecture makes up for it in most cases. And the portability factor (for me) makes up for it in all cases.
That said, I too would love to see another attempt at a 15" that was really a 15" with a 50% faster GPU, as said before the m15x was really more comparable to a 17" in overall bulk and weight, but not in performance. -
I am loving mine so far, I really don't game much, but the games I would run I am sure run great, plus I find this thing pretty dam portable, seems like people blow the wait out of proportion sometimes, its really not bad at all, an external display can fix any screen size issue...it seems like with games these days you have to replace your laptop every year to even play them at high levels

Somehow, I feel that the m14x really isn't all that great for its performance-weight ratio.
You have laptops like this: New LG P330 laptop has it all: brains, brawn, and beauty -- Engadget
with Sandy Bridge i7 and GT555m in a 13.3" size factor and at half the weight of the m14x.
Now if the m14x came with at least a GTX460m then it would befit its gaming heritage.
Laptops have always been all about efficiency rather than pure power unlike desktops, and the m14x, while still relatively powerful, does not score very well in this regard.
It's kind of in the middle of nowhere and had it not been for its Alienware branding (like if it was MSI branded or something), I doubt many people will have gone for it. -
What. That. Isnt. Real.
I doubt in the end theyll put the 555M in, and if they do itll be severely nerfed. They're probably gonna put a 550M in. Ill continue to watch it though. -

Here are some other laptops besides the LG P330 and of different sizes and classes which showed great performance-weight ratios back in their hay-day:
1. The Acer 3820TG, which boasted dual cooling fans for both the GPU and CPU in a 13" chassis and a 5650m at 1.6kg
2. The revised edition HP envy 15, with a great 1080 FHD radiance screen and a 5830m at 2.5kg
3. The Sony Vaio Z11-Z14 which was widely regarded as the best 13" laptop back in its time with a price to match (it comes with SSDs up to 512GB or even 1024GB in raid 0 array and a FHD 1080 96% aRGB screen in 13" size) at 1.32kg
4. The MSI GX640 at 2.7kg with a 5870m and 1st gen quad core.
All of these laptops showed great engineering feats of efficient space usage.
Each of them had something special going on for it, and so does the rest of the AW lineup.
The m14x is still the weakest link in the AW range so it's not really suitable as a m15x replacement. Too much of a performance trade-off has been made for the relative gain in portability. Perhaps AW could have placed a better GPU in the m14x but did not want it to impact the m17x sales.
M14x a suitable M15x replacement?
