Which one should i get?
Amazon.com: Cooler Master Notepal U2 Notebook Cooler with Two Fans R9-NBC-8PBK-GP: Electronics
The u2 i hear is best for the alienware m14x, but on amazon it says its for 17" laptops. Would it be too big? It has two fans right? Or should i get the u1 coolmaster?
Could someone post pics of their u2 on the m14x? of the best locations on the pad of course?
Thanks

anything with 2 fans is nice. i got the cooler master storm SF-19. its awesome, you can control the fan speed, and the LED lights. only problem is that when you put a laptop on it, it has this weird sound like the laptop is heavy or something. doesnt really matter if you have headphones on blasting away music or guns.
-
The advertising is somewhat misleading, because I also currently have the U2 Notepal, and it is perfectly fit the laptop, I also try on my brother's 15" laptop and it is already too bulky on the cooler, so I guess the 17" will be no doubt that it would be too big to fit the cooler.
For pics, I'll put on up later because now I'm not at home. -
btw CGSDR, how did you change ur BF3 name from N0WHERE15SAFE to CGSDR? and how can you have 2 pc accounts for BF3?
-
That would be off topic, anyway for unknown reason it seem that I am the only one to able to have 2 active soldier at the same time, I dont why, but at the time I first join the Beta, I remember that the Battlelog used to ask me to choose which active soldier or which default EA persona I want to use. So I think the reason to that is maybe the "CGSDR" is my main EA persona while the "N0WHERE15SAFE" is Origin Persona, still I dont know that reason. You can change your Origin Name Here: Change Origin ID

This is how I setup my CM U2 Notepal:

So do i choose the 17" option on amazon because it is for the U2? I have the m14x. Because when i click the 14" it shows the U1? Im so confused...
-
No need for confusion, it's real simple:
The U1 is the smallest and has one fan.
The U2 is larger and has two fans.
The U3 is the largest and has three fans.
If you go to the Coolermaster site or look for the dimensions, you can see their exact sizes. Don't worry about what is says about "Fits 14" notebooks", because not every 14" notebook is the same size. I have an Alienware m14x and an IBM T23 Thinkpad. Both are 14" notebooks. The Alienware is bigger.
The U2 is the perfect size for the m14x.
That means the U1 might work, or it might be too small. It also means the U3 will work, but it might be too large if you value your desk space.
Clicking options on Amazon have absolutely nothing to do with anything. Check around, read some reviews, search the forum. You'll see lots of people use the U2 for their m14x. I am one of them. It fits perfectly, and you can move the fans to optimize the cooling flow for the vents on the m14x. -
I see, thanks rubber.
Very imformative. Could you click on my user name and answer the last reply on my BIOS post? Its a question about wheres the best place to put the laptop. -
I might have to pick one of these up.
I've already got a laptop riser stand but I guess having the fans on a cooling stand would actualy cool my m14x rather than just letting the air flow on my riser?
Can you hear the fans on the U2 or are they completely silent? -
At the first few minute of turn it on, you wont hear anything out of it, but after something like an hour, you sure will hear it humming, but it wont be as loud as the actual fan of the laptop itself. And can be eliminate if you put on a headphone or the laptop's speaker for me I dont mind it because it help cool my laptop down.
-
Yeah I guess any additonal fan noises won't really make much different to the m14x? lol
I've just ordered the u2 so will report back how well I get on with it.
-
I have the U1 its a perfect size for the m14x and you can move the fan to almost the perfect place... however the fans for these are rather weak and even though they push a good amount of air for the size (and no sound) I haven't seen much added value to the fan (in terms of cooling). However I did get a dust cover for it and it seems to help prevent the dust accumulation from traveling up into the laptop.

Is it normal for my m14x to blast its fans when im playing a game such as BF 3 and Rage? I mean its a gaming laptop right? I am going to get the U2 cooler master pad. But how long can I safely game for before it overheats? Is it bad to keep my laptop battery at high performance all the time?
-
Nevermind, anyways thanks everyone for replying
-
Wait, i just realized. Wont it be awkward gaming when the cooling pad is slanted?
-
You'd get used to wit hit, it seem like most other cooler also does that too, during the first few week, I dont feel very well with it, but then I got used to with cooler, and now if without the cooler, sometime I seem to felt awkward instead, lol
-
Exactly, same here. When I take my m14x to work, I don't take my cooler with. But I always have a book or journal with me to tuck under the back to tilt it up a bit, for airflow and because I'm much more comfortable with the slant.
I searched around for a cooler that wasn't slanted, and then thought about picking up a small audio interface for the m14x that was the perfect height to sit under the cooler in the front, so that the laptop was level, but found that I actually prefer the slant now. -
Do the fans make a noticeable difference to the cooling of the laptop compared to just venting it by propping it up?
-
i just bought this cooler at frys, its almost like it was made for alienware...it changes colors, has 4 usb ports and variable fan speed (dial control, no 1-3 settings like most) the ONLY thing i dont care for is the power supply adds an extra cable but ill prob just clip it onto the laptop's power supply to keep it neat. the fans get a little noisy when you max it out but i usually have headphones in so it doesnt bug me anyways.
CM Storm Products: SF-19 USB3.0
i think ill take a shot at turbo boost and possibly overclocking now. -
The U2 is perfect for the M14X. When you take off the fans, the deck acts as a shell that you can put your laptop snuggly in adding an extra layer of protection when you put it in your bag. And the fans can be placed anywhere on the pad, I placed the fans underneath both of the vents. It might not seem fancy or high tech, but for what it is, it lets you have a cooling pad that doesn't take up any room in the bag.
-
Awesome,
Thanks guys
-
They definitely make a difference. I don't take my cooler to work and just take a book to prop it up. There is a 7-10C difference using the cooler at home.
To me it just makes sense: Use a cooler whenever you're going to be gaming for an extended period of time. -
ima pick me up one of the u2 ones for my m14x too
-
seams the cooler master U2 is the way to go, whats it like on your lap in bed?
-
After 3-4+ hours of playing BF3 on my Alienware m14x r2, it started getting really hot and the game started to become sluggish. I went with the Cooler Master Notepal X3. Does a great job and I can game as long as I want.
