Hey guys, just this morning, my laptop wouldn't charge when i hooked it up to the AC and it just keeps running on battery. Any ideas how i could fix this?

PS: i think it's either the charger or there's a problem with the laptop. Also, i just received it 5 days ago.

Know anyone else who has a similar adapter? you could try using that one.

Also, like 0204 asked, is the blue led on the cord lighting up? It might also be a battery issue...

Okay sorry that it took me so long to reply.

    1) The blue LED charger light is still lit when i switch on the AC.

    2) Nope, have not messed with the BIOS since im not really good with computer stuffs.

    3) And nope, i do not have another buddy with the similar adapter. ):

Also, i contacted the technical helpline and tried to troubleshoot to determine if the problem is with the battery or the motherboard itself. Turns out that when i disconnected the battery, and tries on the AC, my poor M14X does not respond. Hence i believe that the motherboard may have issues.

    Thanks all!

Eh? I was under the impression the power is routed via the battery, meaning that removing the battery will effectively break the circuit, so you couldn't start anyway - atleast that was the way on my sister's xps... It may not be a motherboard problem after all...

Tried contacting dell after all then? they should cover a replacement for you, keep hammering on their doors !

You cant use the other or even similar adapter on the M14x one, because the voltage might be slightly higher or lower and so it can damage the laptop.

But if it is the same one yes you can.

Back to topic, Call Dell ask for a replacement, since your laptop is new and under warranty they send in one in just like a few day to overnight.

What is the update on this? Mine just started doing the same thing.

I was playing a game and all of a sudden it switched to battery mode, I have tried my charger on another pc and another charger on mine. And it looks like my PC mobo is messed up.

you guys should check the inside of the power cord on the end.. there should be a tiny tiny metal pin in there, if there isnt, it has probably broken off..

In my case, I turned off my laptop and left it off for 10 minutes and now it works again. But I am not happy about it choosing to stop charging randomly.

I use my M14X very heavily, as in probably 50+ hours a week. And this happened once to me. My power adapter was glowing blue and plugged into the laptop, but my laptop was on battery mode and the charge was slowly draining. Even weirder is that I have my Alien FX only to turn on when the AC adapter is plugged in. So when the power adapter was plugged in, the Alien FX turned on, but the battery wasn't being charged and power options still showed battery mode. I tried unplugging the charger from both the wall and the laptop many times and nothing helped.

So, how did I fix it? Well, to be honest, I didn't do anything. I just saved all my work, backed up my HDD while I still had battery power, and readied myself for the worst. I continued surfing the net for answers until my laptop's battery died. I just left the laptop plugged in and gave up. I came back a few hours later, tried turning it on, and BAM everything worked fine. The problem magically disappeared and never came back.

So... idk if my story was of any help, but the problem appeared out of nowhere and went away just as strangely.

I had the same problem, I even posted here but no one came with the right solution.

In my case my motherboard had an EMP chip that was burned. The guy replaced it. Cost me 25 bucks. Probably happened cause of overclocking while playing but my temperature wasn't too high, around that late 70s.

It could also be a problem with the diode or plug.

I also had an issue with charging. I needed to disable charging so I did it in Bios. After my battery was almost empty I wanted to recharge it, so I re-enabled charging in Bios but the battery would not start charging, of course, the computer was running off power outlet.

    Solution:

I drained the batery to 0%, made sure the laptop is not connected to power outlet, held power button for 5 seconds (display would blink for 2 seconds trying to start win 7). Then I plugged in the power plug, started system and the battery started charging. This happens every time I disable charging in Bios.
