Hmmm download HWMonitor and post your temps...

Let's rule out it's an overheating problem first...

Add me to this list, mine also started this over the weekend. Not a heat issue, temps are super low. Will happen on a cold boot or gaming for hours.

My regular laptop does this every once in a while when it's running SUPER hot. But it won't turn off the fans till I open it, log back into windows, and close the lid again.

Not at all mate... My R2 is performing flawlessly (knocks on wood). Fans aren't nosiy or on all the time. Boot times aren't the greatests but that's b/c I didnt go with the SSD. I really dont mind waiting 10 more secs for windows to load.

I wouldn't have second thoughts. This is minor and likely software related. This is a fantastic little machine.

I tried out with and without IME. Driver from DVD and from support page. No difference. By now I cannot reproduce it. It suddenly happens.

    My system:
    Core i7 3820QM
    Intel 310 and Intel 520
    Nvidia 650M GT 2GB

Hi, I believe I'm having the same issue. Started about a week ago. And it's been almost 3 weeks into purchase. I get random freezes and can't power off unless I hold down the alien head..

Dell have offered to replace my motherboard although I have a feeling it wont fix it.
I've also noticed that everything seems to be running fine temp wise apart from the Intel 4000 GPU

My intel 4000 GPU hits a crazy 137 degrees C on Skyrim after 30mins on low/mid settings.
On regular use it's about 70-75 degrees C which Is still pretty high considering my Nvidia is only on 50 C

I'm probably going to get dell to replace my motherboard and will update if it solves anything.

But I'm pretty certain it's something to do with software not working well with the Ivy Bridge atm..

Although I am no computer expert.

Dont second guess yourself with buying an r2 .. My fans kick on nicely, sometimes I have to re-start bf3 to get them to slow down but thats a 10 second fix which is no problem at all.. and for boot up.. lol SSD would be retarded fast, My boot time is maybe 20 seconds with a reg HD, so a SSD maybe 7 seconds.. thats just stupid.

I had this problem (using mSATA ssd). But, I had turned off some startup programs in the msconfig. When I restored it to normal boot-up, the problem was fixed.

    Take this to PChelpforum.

Their website solves those issues. This is more of an enthusiasts forum.

As won't shutdown , is it when you clicked "shutdown" , the screen goes black and those AW FX keyboard lighting still running?

This happen when I first got the machine and raided msata+hdd.

I installed SSD and separated the msata(as storage) then flashed bios A02 , I don't have shutdown problem anymore , also bios A02 fixed F12 unable to boot driver too , during A01 , I was unable to select boot driver priority , was using F2 to set it.

I'm not 100% sure everyone here has the exact problem I do.
I get an occasional freeze and hence can't shut down I am only given the choice to hold down the power button.

I had this problem as well out of the box.
setup was basic hdd that came with it 500 or 750gb i dont remember
Made the system restore disks, because my plan was to install my own ssd.
    I installed the new drive,
did a fresh windows install with the disk they provided
restored the alienware feel following the threads on this forum
flashed to the new bios a02.

I have not had the problem since.
Whatever it was, following these steps fixed the problem.

My suggestion maybe do fresh windows install and reload all the drivers and such, see if you still have the issue.

    Tried it... :(
Have had 2 crashes in 4 days. Not as bad as 4 crashes I was having every day. I have a feeling the crashes may have fiddled with my hardware a little.
