Hi Everyone,
I just have a query about my M14x, I've had it since July last year (I have a 2 year warranty on the laptop) and am now experiencing heat issues \ graphics slowdown even with turbo boost off (this is with a proper an artic silver 5 repaste to). I'm basically getting CPU temps in the region of 98 - 99 degrees constantly when gaming (even with games like CS:S etc). I'm going to be calling dell tonight when I get home as that laptop isn't in front of me to log a call for this (I'm fully aware that I will need to remove my SSD and switch back the 2nd HDD for the DVD burner again).
My question is should I be asking for the upgrade to the R2? I'm not doing this for the upgrade as I'm quite content with the R1 and it runs everything I need, but knowing that the R2 will be running cooler, and seeing the failure rate that everyone else is having with the R1, do you think I'd have a case?
Any input will be welcomed,
Thanks in advance,
Brett

I did get an upgrade but you can only get that after 4 interventions on your laptop, and even after 4 intervention you have to be persuasive. Yes you should ask for it. I had a R1 proc i7 2720QM 4GB ram 555m 1.5GT and the replacement is R2 proc i7 2760QM (a bit better, no ivy but I'm not complaining) 6GB of ram at 1600, 650 with 2GB (useless but still) so yeah I'm really happy and my warranty expire in 1 month.

Schedule a technician (new heatsink), clean the insides of your laptop and repaste (high grade) -
Will Dell supply the high grade paste? also will I need to remove my SSD and revert my DVD drive back to a DVD drive instead of having a second hard drive in there? Cause I don't want them coming out and telling me my warranty is void because I've added these things. -

The only 2 things really that make it a big upgrade in my eyes is the 650m and the chance that the system will run cooler, ivy bridge will honestly not make a lick of difference and the fan noise... well I don't mind it on the R1 at all, means I can crank the audio up and have a excuse to do so LOL
I have not come across a game yet that doesn't run smoothly on my R1, even crysis 2 ran like a dream on medium - high settings. I get a stable 45 - 50 fps on battlefield 3 with everything on medium \ high (I prefer smoother frame rates over graphical sparklies). I personally don't think it's going to be worth going out and wasting money upgrading to the R2 if you have an R1 already, R3 might be a different story but until then not worth the coin, but if dell wants to upgrade me for free, I'll take it. -
Personally, I'm not upgrading until the R3. Rule of thumb is always skip a the next revision.
Your warranty does not void if you add/remove RAM/HD/Optical. -
Dont forget guys, these are basically ALL rumors so far.
We know there will be a performance increase, but it could easily run just as hot
