I am thinking about doing some recording for a band some of my friends are in. They are currently using Cubase 5 for their audio mixing software and I have been reading up on recording. I came across ASIO for low latency recording and checked into the sound blaster recon 3d and found that this sound card does not have ASIO native support. I have two questions. Does anyone that does music recording feel strongly that ASIO is a must? Also I found a site that has a ASIO driver that they claim works on the software side and doesn't need to be build into the sound card. Do you think this will work with the recon3d card?

This is the link to the site. ASIO4ALL - Universal ASIO Driver pretty much it seems like their just trying to by pass the normal pathway for the sound and get it straight to the program to cut down on latency issues

    Thanks for any help/advice.

Why would it matter if you're simply recording line input sound? Or are you planning to do mixing as well?

Whatever you do, remember that wireless cards are notorious for causing spikes in latency. I disable the wireless adapter before doing any live shows (DJ/VJ).

Hey, I'm not really familiar with the m14x's sound card, but it sounds like you're planning on recording using microphones. If that's the case, I would suggest you invest in an external sound card for your laptop (these usually allow direct recording as well and usually have asio support). This will almost always give you better results than plugging in directly to a laptop's built-in sound card. If you're planning on using condenser mics for the vocals as well, you'll need something that provides phantom power, which most external sound cards also provide.

Something like this Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio Interface | Musician's Friend would work great as long as you're not recording an entire band or drum kit all at once, and it has great sounding preamps.
