TBH though I'm kind of surprised you need to do this with an i5... I bet you would still like the improvement after cleaning & repaste.

Well replacing the heat sink went well, he even scraped off the factory paste and applied the paste i had! Put the laptop back together and it booted with 4 beeps...memory failure i think it is from what i read! So he re seated the ram and tried again but still 4 beeps :p
He couldnt fix it so i rang dell and now they are sending another technician out with a new motherboard and ram, fun times!

Did you check my thread to see details on how it should be done?

There should be no "scraping" involved  They should use swabs and a solvent kit to gently remove the old paste to a mirror finish.

The beeping is also part of the process. When I rebooted after a repaste, I heard the same thing. All I did was to hold down power until it shut down, then boot again.

It's not something to toy around with, and the gains can be great when done well.

Yes I expected beeping, restarted and still got it =/ I also removed the battery and held the power down to drain it, disconnected the CMOS battery for a few minutes and removed and refitted the ram while swapping them. Think I'll let the guy replace the mother board then re paste it myself at a later date! Technicians always seem rushed anyway :p

It sounds like he fried the mobo or something, or maybe just left a small cable disconnected? My advice is to learn ASAP how to service your own notebook. Think of it like a car. It's a tool we need every day (often as a source of income), yet most people just shrug like it's magic and pay someone to do it half-assedly. The on-site techs for AW sound like they are mostly mediocre people who have been contracted to support notebooks they have never used before. Good luck! After a clean, precise repaste with IC Diamond, my r2 is literally like a different computer when I stress it during my live shows (720p beat-synced visuals with lots of effects).

Hey y'all - Would any of you pay me to clean/repaste your AW notebooks? The gains I experienced from my own procedure have greatly surprised me. To the degree that my r2 seems a few generations beyond my r1 :] I guess I would do it via shipping and just charge an hourly rate or a set fee? I have over ten years of pro and home computer support, and I use my own AW for some very demanding live A/V shows, so I think I am well-qualified. I am so tired of hearing about peopl'e expensive toys overheating, and also hearing how bad the in-home techs are about nuanced procedures. Just something to consider... I could make it transparent and take photos while I do my work so customers can see what things looked like. I think you'd me amazed by how much a rebuild can change your daily computing... I doubt AW would ever help or sponsor me, but one can only hope they see the potential to help their unhappy customers...

Just wanted to bump and say I continue to be impressed by the IC Diamond vs. factory results :] I'm thinking it may have cured and actually improved a bit? Might redo the tests when it's set up on my elevated notebook stand that gives max airflow. It practically vibrates up there...

I re-pasted my laptop last night with Tuniq TX-4 and have been running tests all day.

Before the re-paste, my CPU would reach an average of 91c and GPU 75c under stress.

After the re-paste averages CPU: 80c GPU: 61c

Conclusion: I highly recommend re-pasting with good thermal compound. It definitely lowers temperatures, better performance, and your hardware should last longer.

Has anyone seen a comparison/shoot-out done to compare IC Diamond, Tuniq TX-4, and other pastes?

Other than having a fan under the laptop and disabling Turbo on the CPU, what else can be done to control heat issues on a M14x R2?

If I don't get a cleaner with my thermal paste, what should I use to clean off the stock thermal compound? Alcohol and q-tips?

I think there's a comparison graphic in this thread

    In order of effectiveness IMO:
Repaste > propping back up 1/2" > disable turbo > use notebook cooler > block Flash when browsing > install SSDs not HDDs > remove RAM cover

BTW external coolers don't make sense because the high temps are already being achieved internally and IMO you're just venting the hot air faster. If you repaste, then you're starting with the max potential for lowering temps.

I believe that any aid in helping the heat pipes cool the processors is helpful.

Is there tested evidence that shows removing the RAM cover lowers temperatures?

What is the reason for the RAM cover?

Only anecdotal evidence that it drops a degree or something, hence ranking it last on my list

After repaste mine Alienware m14x r2, when the fan spin faster i can feel a slight vibration coming from above the fan ( from the keyboard ), if i put my finger on the middle of the fan from the back of the laptop the vibracion ceases, maybe was a bad assembly from my part ? the notebook have 4 month only, what i do ? you recommend to call dell?
    Thx!

This seems to be a common problem... Just make sure you assemble it exactly like you took it apart. There's a little spacer, a bunch of tiny cables, etc..

I've seen some use Isopropyl 99% alcohol, you can get this from any drugstore. This is essentially what artic-clean is...plus a lot cheaper, but without the lemon smell :D

i went with the two bottle cleaner i linked to, it has a solvent for the paste and then a second solution for polishing it clean.

i don't know really what is the problem, what do you mean about the little spacer ? i never call Dell ( because is my first Alienware ) if i don't tell them that i opened the laptop and then they see the screws openend on the motherboard and all that stuff, can become a problem about the warranty ?
The laptop have 5 month, maybe was the air compressed..because the sound is normal for me, i saw videos of the fan noise alienwares and the noise buzzing was terrible, not like my laptop.
