Hi everyone. I'm thinking of purchasing the new 14 incher but I don't really want 1080p as odd as it sounds. I like lower res screens. Plus it'll allow me to run at higher graphical settings. But the screen quality IS important to me. Is it true that only the 1080p panel is IPS, and the other isn't?

Does anyone have the non IPS screen? How do you like it?

I got it for the exact same reasons you listed. Putting it shortly and briefly, I think it's terrific. I don't see anything wrong with it. I believe the 1080p is the only one that's IPS.

I'm also getting the 1600x900 on the Alienware 17, largely because some of the software I use doesn't really work very well with high resolutions. You can't really make the fonts very big or they won't fit into the allocated boxes anymore :)
Because of this, I can't really use displays with a DPI that's too high.

if they are using the same panel as they used in previous models, the 1600x900 panel was complete crap. It wasn't the resolution that was the issue, but the very poor contrast. Difference between the 1600x900 and the 1920x1080 panels are night and day.

Edit: As to the scaling issues, that should all be rectified with windows 8.1 for the higher resolution displays that are supposed to start showing up later this year. :)

The screen on the 1366x768 might not be as good as the 1080p IPS with higher color gamut. The only good news I can tell about this display is that it will no longer be a glare type/glossy and it will be a 768p matte display. Information on color gamut, contrast ratio, black levels we do not have for the 768p unfortunately.

This summarized what I was going to say about the differences. The 1080p is the only IPS one on this platform.

The 1080p IPS screen on the AW 14, what's the gamut %?

From my understanding more gamut % means richer color, like blacks are blacks and not grey on the color spectrum?

I would guess about 70%. Not sure, though. Good question. Can anyone confirm?
