As the title says, new CPU's for the alienware 14 have arrived.
For now they are only available on the most expensive model. And for these new processors you also have to pay the extra upgrade price of 300$/400$. After that the price goes over 2K. It's expensive.

Now Only thing to see is the arrival of the 800 series GPU on it.

The new CPU's are: (note, these CPU's did release January this year)
    - 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4810MQ processor(Quad Core, 6MB Cache, up to 3.8GHz)
    - 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4910MQ processor (Quad Core, 8MB Cache, up to 3.9GHz)

Note: These are currently only available for the US. So it's only available at alienware.com at the moment. (Kidna stupid. Because all the alienware orders around the world get to the same Manufacturer in China, and the pc's are shipped from there directly to the costumer)

thanks for sharing the info, i'm patiently waiting for the 860m to be available in order to do the mobo swap on my 14.. not that there is something wrong with the current 765m.. just more power is still more power :D

I've recently bagged a 765m board for mine - coming from Australia soon. Looks like the 860m is a few steps further up the class 1 GPU board, but I would bet that availability will be scarce and initial cost would be prohibitive - IMHO - to justify doing it right away if you have a 765m already. Still, as you say, more power is MORE POWER! LOL. For me, going from a GT750m to a GTX765m is quite a jump, and for the price I paid (around £190gbp) it was a no-brainer.

The thing is, there are 2 issues. 1st of all the 765m is 1 year old. And 2nd of all, the new 860M has a maxwell based chip. (supposedly they will use that one), that one has a significant lower power usage, which means more battery life while gaming and lesser heat, which again enables more room for overclocking which means even more power. The difference is actually quite interesting instead of a plain power up. So getting a laptop with a 700 series graphics cards at this very moment is not that good unless it's a Huge sale/deal or something.

True, but I doubt we'll see 860m motherboards for the 14 becoming available as aftermarket parts any time soon. I very much doubt you would even be able to buy one at Dell's prices directly from Dell. Probably the best chance of acquiring just a board with a 860m soldered on would be from an Ebay part-out.....which would likely take some time, too.....

In the meantime, for someone like myself sitting on a GT750m, the best bang for buck is a 765m mobo at a decent price. As we all know, new bleeding edge tech commands a hefty price - I've seen US based sellers on Ebay selling the 765m variant board for $499 so a new 860m board is gonna run quite a lot, I would imagine, based on new tech prices.

Perhaps the smart move would be to wait a while and see what gives, but there will always be someone who's prepared to pay through the nose for the latest hardware - no matter what the performance gain might be.

Oh great as if we need more power than a standard 4700mq/hq. How about some 800m series Maxwell goodness or 870m kepler Alienware?

On the US site prior to the release of these new CPU's the price differences were like this:

    i7-4700 +0$
    i7-4800 +300$
    i7-4900 +400$
(th eprice differences are the same now the 4800 and 4900 replaced with the 4810 and 4910)

On my country it's as following:

    i7-4700 +0$
    i7-4800 +100€
    i7-4900 +350€

So If I were to get the 4810 for 100€ extra, that might be worth it for me as a computer scientist. while the 4700 is a CPU that is more that 1 year old.

Wait.. Are you saying that you can replace the video card in these? I bought mine with a GT750 (BIG MISTAKE) and would want to upgrade to at least the gtx765. If I find a card on ebay, can I change it? Also, is there anywhere I can buy the parts aftermarket?

Well, you can do what I am doing to upgrade the video card in an AW14, which is to swap out the entire motherboard. The GPU's in th 14's are soldered onto the MB and are not MXM GPU's like the 17's and 18's have which can be removed and upgraded easily. If you find a motherboard with a GTX765m, by all means, you can upgrade. That's what I'm doing and I have my new mobo (bought off Ebay) sat here waiting for me to get around to it.

Here's a listing on Ebay right now for a motherboard with a GTX 765m on board: OEM DELL Alienware 14 R1 Haswell i7 Motherboard NVIDIA GT 765M 2KVD5 / LA-9201P

Ah man that sucks! I was sure I could replace it easily like MXM GPUs. I can only find the one you sent me. Is there any other place I can buy them?

Well, they are pretty hard to come by. I got mine for a couple of hundred UK pounds from a guy selling one in Australia. He shipped it to me in the UK. I'd been on the look out for one for a while on Ebay as Dell UK wanted over £600gbp for one. You could try Dell, but be prepared to pay through the nose if they will sell you one. Other than that, places like PartsPeople may be worth a shot...the part number you would need is 2KDV5 (or 02KDV5) if you look at the start of the AW 14 Owners's Lounge.

That's what I'm seeing.. Oh well, thanks for your help! I almost ordered the MXM card on its own..

No problemo. Glad you didn't buy a GPU which you couldn't use!

Yet another new CPU has been added as an option in the alienware 14.
The i7 4700qm is now replaced with the brand new i7 4710qm

Yet again without any announcement anywhere, as if they don't care. And yet still not a single word about the GPU update *sigh*

If Alienware doesnt announce a gpu update for A14 at E3 2014 like last year, I might as well get the new Gigabyte P34G v2 !
