I'm starting to think people have never actually heard hair dryers or jet turbines. :)

I asked for vane's reasons in particular because I thought it would help people with giving a recommendation.

I guess I need a hair dryer like yours, well not actually since I don't really have that much hair left. lol. I flashed my new bios yesterday and my fan went full blast and it's just not that loud. However, I am old so maybe my hearing is going along with my eye sight.

On a whim I just picked up an AW 14 at my local Microcenter... got the LG screen and I'm plenty pleased with it. It gets pretty bright and on the highest setting my eyes had to adjust. The screen is beautiful guys... get the 1080!

If it says LGD03 something, it is a LG

    glad you love it!!
personally, I didn't installed the latest nvidia beta driver, partly because it wouldn't allow me to do so lol(320.49)
and the stock driver does it's job well. No big issue so far, then why bother installing a new driver?

Just go into the synaptics driver properties. You will be able to enable gestures there. I would five better instructions but I'm at work

Perhaps. There are some performance gains for specific games, but I'm not sure that's an across the board increase. These drivers are stable though.

One more comment on the "dim" thing. I don't think this thing is dim until I set it next to my desktop 27" ips screen that has its own freaking power source. So while I can see some people arguing that it looks dim, without comparing it I think its fine but you guys have me double guessing myself lol. Should I be expecting desktop brightness?

Unless you have a colorimeter to measure your display's native luminance (brightness) then it's really more about what you like. Most people here are worried about some of the reviews measuring their panels at 250cd/m2 or less. 250 is actually fairly bright and if you're indoors very bright in most environments. My LG panel measures just a tad over 300cd/m2 and unless I'm outside I never have it at full brightness. My new i1D Pro colorimeter is set to arrive tomorrow and I'll be posting a full on write-up of the the 14's LGD03EA panel along with an ICC profile.

If any of you who have the AUO panel then notebookceck.net's review has one you can download and set as your default display profile. That *may* give you better color or not..

That LG panel is the one I have. I looked up the brightness of my desktop monitor and it is 350 cd/m2. So it should definitely be somewhat brighter than this and it is.

Finally joining you guys! Have an m14xr1 with gt555m and I5.

Had a long debate between going alineware 17 vs alienware 14 but decided to stick with the 14 because I love the size and feel.

All in all cost me 1350 (After some haggling) and im getting it with GTX 765m, Hi Res screen, 2 years maintenance and the TactX mouse! Excited!

LCD backlights generally get dimmer with age. Your desktop display might have, when it was new, been somewhere close to 350cd/m2. Luminance and contrast ratio are usually fudged in the marketing specs..

The Alienware 14 should be able to comfortably max out Dota 2 in 1080 whether it has a 750M or 765M.

Are you sure the NVIDIA GPU is being used to run the game and not integrated graphics?

So I placed my order for a new alienware 14 on July 29th. Since then my order has been cancelled by dell and I have been given a new order number THREE times. When tracking it, it never makes it past "Pre-Production". I have tried emailing dell but they have failed to reply. Anybody have any ideas? When it cancels it says there was an error in the configuration. Which i dont see how since you dont really get pick alot of changes. its the alienware 14 with i7-4900mq, no optical drive gtx 765m. its the last option to pick from out the three.

what do you mean by putting steam on max nvidia setting?
what you should do is set the game to be run by nvidia, and do the graphic setting in game rather than using nvidia control panel

alright fingers crossed, technician coming tomorrow, to try to fix 1) the subwoofer, the squeaky enter key, and maybe discuss with him why Im getting a maximum of 3 hours on lowest settings of battery life. I guess if the first two can be resolved that's amazing! otherwise Im returning this for an msi gt

3 hours is about right for streaming video, surfing, and other light duty tasks. I eek out about 3.5 with a custom Power saver profile and display on 1 or 2 brightness. Truth is, the battery on the 14 is a bit weak. So is the "sub woofer"

Is the bottom door the same for the models that have CD drive and without cd drive? I ask because I took out my CD drive to put in a hard drive and the door seems a more tight fit. Thanks to whoever can answer!

guys i'm plugged in running on mains power and the battery level icon in the taskbar shows '100% available plugged in charging'. is it 'normal' then for the power light shown in the vid to be glowing as if charging still even though i'm at 100%?

Right click on the desktop - if you see Intel & nvidia control panels, you're on optimus. If you only see nvidia, you're on discrete, nvidia only.
