I received my m14x and for my surprise the windows 8 is installed at the HDD instead of the SDD. I called the dell support thinking this is a error of configuration and for my surprise the support told me this is correct, they don't install the OS at the SSD if I want i can do the clean install at the SSD but they cant do support for that.

I don't understand how dell could sell a specific update feature "128GB mSATA Boot Drive + 500GB 7,200rpm SATA 3Gb/s" more expensive than others sites and don't do the correct configuration of the system.

I had to remove all the partitions and re installed the windows 8 at the SSD partition and now it's right. I pass from a 5,9 to 8,1 windows disc data transfer rate.

The problem is i lost a lot of time and don't have the computer with the factory installation.

This configuration is correct, every one have the same problem?

    Thanks

Sorry about the inconveniences with phone support. At least now the PC is fine. Here is a thread that you might find useful.

@Alienware_Luis... Do they all come this way? I just submitted an order with the same config with 500gb HD and 128gb Msata boot drive. I assume the OS is on the Msata drive when I placed the order. Thanks in advance

No they don't. It might have been an issue during the building process. Let me know how yours arrives.

I posted separately about this yesterday, but mine came this way as well (128gb SSD + 750 HDD setup) with the OS on the HDD. I took an AlienRespawn image, then did a clean install on the SSD. Before doing so I downloaded all the drivers to a USB stick from Dells website which seemed to save me some time, then followed the forum sticky post on install order. So far things seem fine, though te recovery partition doesn't exist on the SSD as a result, it is still on the HDD.

A suggestion for an eaiser way to move the boot OS to the mSATA drive - try Acronis Migrate Easy.

I would use a partition editor to shrink the boot partition on the hard drive to something a bit smaller than the size of the mSATA drive. Leave the rest of the hard drive unused.

Then tell Migrate Easy to automatically adjust the partition size when copying from hard drive to mSATA drive. It will adjust the partition size to the max that the mSATA drive supports.

This should produce a bootable image on the mSATA drive with everything - look and feel, drivers, applications, recovery partitions and other hidden partitions, etc, etc - intact and ready to go. The only other step would be to tell the laptop in it's BIOS to boot from the mSATA drive.

If you do this, I would suggest removing the hard drive and putting it away for a short while. Replace it with any other drive if you need the data space. Keep the hard drive as a backup, just to circumvent Mr. Murphy. Funny how often having a good backup strategy seems to prevert the data loss that a backup is intended to recover from.....

I can vouch that this works well, having done it on my own on my M11x-R1 about two years ago.

I ordered the M14X R2 with "boot drive", 750GB HDD and 64GB mSATA SSD. AW installed the OS on the HDD. However, I have left the OS on the HDD and am just using the SSD as the caching device. I haven't used it long enough to see any notice any speed difference.

You will notice a huge difference. Moving the OS to the 32GB mSATA was totally worth the effort. 64GB mSATA would likely be easier.

I just ordered an m14x with a 32GB mSATA and am interested in moving the OS to the mSATA as well. How much space was left after the OS installation on your 32GB mSATA? Was there enough space left for a decent cache file?
