I currently have a samsung 840 pro as my main drive in my aw14. I'm looking to add more storage to avoid wearing out my ssd. Should I remove the CD drive and replace it with 750 @ 7200 rpm or should I buy a msata? The extra storage will be used to keep music, movies, documents, and also torrent downloading. Thanks very much!

Well first off I wouldn't worry about wearing out your SSD to much they are designed to last quite a long time. As to your storage options, you can get a 1tb 7200rpm drive to and a caddy to replace your CD drive relatively cheaply compared to getting an mSATA drive. Plus you would have much more space for all your content. :)

    Hope that helps!!

Yes, the PRO is actually a very durable drive.

I'm just gonna say that I have the 840 pro with a crucial m4 and it's sooooo worth it. If you don't need tb of space and you have the cash, you won't regret it. Plus you don't have to lose the optical drive

I'd put it on the 840 pro as it is faster than the crucial drive. :)

I have the 840pro as my primary drive and I put the 750gb hard drive that came with it into a cd-rom caddy.

A little off topic, does any one know if the msata is sata-3 or sata-2?

EDIT: I am assuming we are talking about the new Alienware 14.

Main drive and mSATA slots are SATA 3 and the optical drive is SATA 2 on the new AW14.

Good to know––I've read in several places (including earlier in this thread) that the ODD is sata 2, thanks for clearing that up

Is it okay for me to get the new crucial m500 msata or should I stick with the m4 msata?

didnt think this many people were rocking the 840 pro. I have the 512gb 840 pro in my AW 14 and LOVE it. I dont really need more storage tho, and use my drive to burn cd's sooo im good for now. otherwise ill invest in msata

I don't see why it would be an issue to get the m500. It should be plug and play just like the m4 and the samsung msata drives. :)

I'd also like to point out if you add a 1TB HDD then you will have higher operating temperatures and less battery life. SSDs operate at much lower current (A) requirements. If you need more space, go with an mSATA so you don't sacrifice performance.

Thanks! I've done a lot of builds and customizations and the common theme is trying to move away from mechanical drives in the mobile space. Especially in light of Haswell effeciency and Optimus graphics.

You're only going to sacrifice a few minutes of battery, but each to their own. ;)

I can say it's better than that. I switched from the factory 500GB 7200RPM on my R1 to a Plextor M2 SSD and I gained over an hour of battery life. I had the machine for a few months before I switched so I have quite a bit of baseline data to go by.

Hi guys, I have another question.

I'm planning to put SSD main slot (top) and HDD in cd drive (bottom). Will this be okay to do? My concern is that the HDD heat with rise up and affect my SSD heat. Will this set up be okay or should I switch them around? Thanks for the help!

Hard drives don't really generate that much heat, especially if you are using it as a data drive, so I think it will be fine the way you have it. :)
