Well, so just a bit of background I guess, finally going to be trading in my 6 year old Motorola Razr for one of these spiffy new smartphones that have been all the rage. :p

So I know that the m14x is one of the few, if only laptops along with the rest of the AW line to have a sim card slot, and I just had a few questions about it:

    1. Is is regular sim or microsim?
    2. Has anyone used it? How does it work? Just pop it on and immediately I will have the 3g/4g reception replace my regular wireless card?
    3. This last question is more for the phone companies likely, but I keep hearing about data usage and etc. (bear with my, again still using a 6 year old phone xD) Will using the sim card on my laptop and doing lots of web-browsing etc eat up all my data super quickly?

That's all I can think of for now, thanks in advance for all the help!

It's a regular sim, I haven't used it but as far as I know you should be able to plug it in and start using it. The only thing I've found around that may be needed is 4G Mobile Broadband Mini-Card Driver A00. I couldn't find the driver on our website so it may not be necessary.

I'll try one in a few minutes and post back what happened

You need to have the wwan card and antenna installed. These items are not listed on the order site, so you need to buy them aftermarket and install them your self.

If you just plug in your sim card, nothing will happen because that slot is not hooked up to anything (untill you install the card)

The driver to the link provided is not compatible with the M14x R2.

Where can such aftermarket components be found? I'm interested in getting this to work on my laptop, I did pop in a regular sim card, nothing happened.

This feature was not offered with the M14x R2, anything you find about this will most likely be 3rd party.

I believe it used to work only with certain providers such as Verizon, about the wwan card and antennas, maybe the R1's work? Not sure tbh

I did modified my m14x r2 with WWAN

I use a 5620 WWAN DELL Card in the mSATA Slot.

The Notebook recognized the Card so did Windows, Win7x64 Drivers are available over Dell, even the Function Key for enabling and disable WLAN,BT,WWAN is showing the Card correctly

But the Functions don't enable the Card Proper so it doesn't give the COM Port to windows. I guess we have to wait till they bring out a BIOS with Support.

I ordered the Antennas from here: http://www.digikey.com/scripts/dksearch/dksus.dll?vendor=0&keywords=931-1056

So i hope someone gets the Card working and post the solution here

    regards

i was always wondering about that before... i guess i forgot about it... now i that i remember i think it might come in handy...
after looking it up... it is one of the options in the m14x r1 and i didn't get it (just like most people) because it was quite expensive...
the way to find out if you have it or not is to press Fn+F3... if you can un/check mobile broadband then you have it....
otherwise you can just buy the card from ebay... i just ordered one a few minutes ago... around 35 bucks after shipping...
    i ordered this one...
    New Dell Gobi2000 UN2420 2G 3G WWAN Wireless Card GPS 5620 | eBay
which is similar to the dell product in this page...
    Wireless 5620 Multi-Mode Gobi Mobile Broadband Mini-Card : Networking | Dell
if you need to find it just look up "wireless 5620 gobi" on ebay and you might want to get gobi2000 instead of gobi1000...
