I have just received a new M14X and have noticed that the red paintwork on the lid is not smooth, its difficult to describe but it almost has ripples in it.

Does this sound normal to you guys, i am assuming it should be perfectly smooth like the black lids (I also have an M17x)

Doesn't sound normal to me. I'd RMA it for a replacement. Sometimes Dell sends out units that have been RMA'd already back to a new customer - I've had several units with defective components on arrival like this (although they were system components, not the lid). Usually a big clue they might have done that is if your system arrives significantly sooner than the estimated shipping date.

BTW its such a shame the paintwork is so fragile. Its very easy to get it scratched - I have been taking care of mine very carefully yet there's still a couple scratches on it. Used to be the same way with the old Dell XPS products (circa 2005-2007) that had the laser-looking etched pattern on the lids.

At least they ship the Alienware's with protective pouches - be sure to use the pouch when you carry the system around as that will definitely help minimize any scratching.
