Even with all of the glitches and problems being reported in this forum I was still set to get an m14x to replace my m11xR1. I wanted a slightly bigger screen, more powerful processor and that was about it so this fit the bill. I have purchased 3 Dell computers and the m11x in the past 6 years so I assumed I would have a little bit of lee-way in getting a little bit of a deal. No such luck.
All I wanted to do was participate in the Xbox 360 deal but with a configuration that was Red in color, 4gb of ram instead of 6gb of ram, and really had no use for the Bluetooth either. Minor changes in my mind and I have read other forum members have had luck doing similar changes. She checked with her "boss" and they couldn't add the Xbox 360 to my order. It is funny that they are offering a "student" deal but forcing certain configs down our throats that aren't even very beneficial for standard users.
Hopefully the Envy 14 SB refresh has a decent screen/gpu or else I guess I may have to go with Asus and just roll the dice with their quality control/power button issues on the new g53 series.
Just wanted to give anyone a heads up that "haggling" really isn't possible with these sales robots that don't care about the customer. In reality they would have lost maybe $70 because I wanted 4gb instead of 6gb but they just couldn't seem to value my business.

I'm going to guess this promotional deal is to move some pre-made systems out the door. Which is why the spec is layed out for you. Sure, they could take on of the pre-made ones, and configure it to your liking, but then you're not buying the pre-made model, you're buying a custom model.
I don't know, I guess to me, it's a good thing, the promotion, if the promotion doesn't fit your needs, then don't participate. Personally (even though I'm not getting one), I'm glad to see a promotion like this. -
Anyway, to the OP, I say try again with a couple different sales reps to see if you get lucky before completely giving up. The other user I know got the deal stated that he had a configuration in his saved cart, and the sales rep opened it up and told him that it was eligible, dunno if you did it that way as well. If not, HP is also participating in the Xbox promo, as well as Amazon and other retailers. Good luck!
Oh and btw, i'm not completely sure these are pre-made models after all...mine were in production for a few days before they were actually shipped. It makes me think that maybe there's a certain set of components that aren't being moved as well (the 6gb, the bluetooth adapter) as other components so they're trying to push them out. -
360 shouldn't sway your sale. If your going to purchase alienware your going to purchase alienware. Ipods or xbox's or cologne isn't going to normally sway a normal alienware customer.
I can understand frustration with a sales rep but if you want an alienware, simply buy an alienware.
If its too expensive then Sager and Asus have great machines as well. -
Sad thing is I will most likely still get a config I want and forget the Xbox I guess I just wanted to vent a bit. I was just surprised nobody could help me out as a multiple returning customer. Premium brands demand premium prices I understand that, I preordered a m11xR1 so trust me I definitely get it.
Oh well, I hope the one I eventually order will be problem free. -
I had the same problem you did. The third sales rep I tried finally told me as long as I am a student and my build has an i7 in it then I can get the deal. Try a different rep and tell them you know other people are able to get the deal without the preconfig system. Good luck!

I called in to order my M14x early last week, laid out exactly what I wanted (the base config, but with 6GB RAM and a 2 year at-home warranty added on for free) and the first lady said she "couldn't do it." The second guy I had not only did it, but I ended up paying $1159.99 with NBD shipping before tax for it. Free stuff and a discount = a win in my book! -
