Does anyone know for what is this connector, looks like a fan connector. Look at the red circle.

Mr. ejohnson and i were wondering about this point on the R2 board. the pads are there to solder on. but....?

wanting to run a 2nd fan after my mods but didnt want to risk it. if it wasnt meant to be used and might over load with too much current draw over the long term use?

im guessing if the header was excluded from production then possibly the other components to make the circuit operate might also have been excluded too?

not having a schematic i was also afraid of shorting out something that would other wise never be grounded, etc with the pads left open.

Never thought of that, I assumed that if there was a plug it may be fully working. Maybe they run out of space so they decide to dont use it. It is possible to measure voltage and ground in the pins to see if it is working? If it is working how the bios will recognize if you plug a fan, how you can control the fan?

looks like there is a plug soldered on that board (M14x R1?).

on the R2 boards ive seen it is not soldered on from the factory.

one day i wanted to take a meter to mine but i spent over an hour googling for the standard pin layout for the 4pin fan connector but all i kept getting was result for desktops. so i never went thru with it.

I also think that it is because of space that it was not used.

yea. there is like NO room inside these M14x chassis....

no joke i think my M11x had more unused space inside the chassi. lol

i have no idea where a 2nd fan would have been proposed to go? logically maybe the other vent area by the RAM? but then where would the RAM have been moved too?

i know from exp that a lot of un-logical things end up in finished products due to ummm... "changes" during the design process. so it may have just been something to do with that.

really would like to know the schematic for those pads tho... :( i wonder if the current fan table would control both headers... or if there is a 2nd table altogether tripped only by say the GPU?

Actually I was thinking to remove the cd drive to free space and figure out what kind of cooling improvements I can do with this. Using this connector to add another fan (if the connector is fully functional) or use the pci slot used for wireless hd transmitter to hook up the fan.
