Am I reading the specs for this unit (m14x) correctly? This 14"-er only goes up to 8GB max?
Thanks - M
-
Yeah, the m11x, m18x, and m17x are the only ones that offer more (m11x ~ 16gb, m18x and m17x ~ 32gb)
-
What's the logic there? How is a smaller laptop (m11x) configurable w/more RAM than the next one up? That just seems...short-sighted there. Unless there's a soon-to-be-coming refresh to the m14x?
-
I was wondering the same,m11x has more ram???No logic to it,I haven't heard of a refresh, but one never knows. We did get 6 new dell skus last week, for q4 2011,But management has been known to pull those without explanation. Also the dell skus seem to tied into verizon, could even be a 3rd party mobile product just with dells affiliation.Had that happen with the streak.Sku came up as new pc.Lol

As far as I know, it also need the CPU to support the RAM size which is i7 2620QM support only up to 16GB (up to 1333Mhz), but for the i7 2720QM and i7 2820QM you can add them up to 32GB, with 2x8GB (up to 1600Mhz) stick.
-
You never really need more than 8 anyways, unless you do a lot of video design, I think.
-
My m14x sports the i7-2630QM and, as it states here, it has a maximum capacity of 16GB for memory.
-
I do a lot of virtualization work and really do use 16 with the work I do. 8 would reaaallly be pushing it.
-
Virtualization sounds like video design, so then I see why you would like more.
-
M11x has 2 ram slots I think, so then they have to be using 8gb sticks right? Maybe you could track down what theyre using, or someone might be selling their 8gb ram sticks from their m11x on ebay or something. It would be interesting to see someone try 16gb (The m14x is certainly powerful enough to run those ram-heavy applications)
-
Oops my bad, I was confused, actually the 2630QM is 16GB while the, 2720QM and 2820QM is 32GB. I will not edit the mistake however I'll quote that for truth.
QFT -
As I understand it, while the CPU may support it, the board doesn't, yes? So far, all specs that I've found around this machine have it maxxing out at 8. I'd be all over this if it was 16 though. Maybe the next refresh.

Just ran the newest version of Alienware Autopsy. It states that 16gb IS supported.
-
A buddy purchased the CORSAIR 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 Laptop Memory Model CMSO16GX3M2A1333C9
So we popped them Into my M14X with Core i5 2410M and it reports 16Gb in the bios and under "my computer" (properties)
I currently run 8Gb with a 240Gb Force 3 SSD and see no need to bump up to 16Gb -
I had a conversation on this forum with someone running 16 Gig RAM (2x8) no problem. However, the M14X manual manual states 2x8 Gig support max.
But 16 Gigs work. -
ive done updates to LAPTOP RAM before even when MFG documentation would state RAM max. at a certain point with no problems. ive always wondered how that is.
-
I was on Dell's website just now and they are offering M14x's with 16gb RAM in the configurations. Sorry, if I'm repeating another post.
-
going to bump it once so that people can make sure if they saw this earlier and didn't look at it again... 16gb is max for the m14x (MOST don't need it though, so don't upgrade for no reason... most don't even need more than 8gb).
Silly Question: Maximum Memory
