I bought my m14x about 2 weeks after it was first released (sadly prior to the xBox offer :( )
I haven't really used it much since then since my desktop is quite a bit better but now I am living in a dorm with only this laptop.
I downloaded and began playing Bioshock 1 and noticed that while I can play it at maximum settings without fault at first, it quickly becomes very laggy and choppy and the audio begins to stutter. I lowered the settings to medium which helped me play it longer without lag but still lagged after about 20 minutes of playing.
I also noticed that the CPU temperature on the 2630qm gets up to around 100 degrees celsius or more which led me to buy a cooling pad (Coolermaster U2). This did not help too much with the choppiness.
I also tried playing Portal 2, Vindictus, Crysis 2, WoW, and still recieved similar results.
I've seen many other people play these types of games at relatively high settings with no problem at all at temperatures of ~80c or ~90c.
I believe this is the effect of CPU throttling from the temperature getting too high but I'm not sure.
Would a cooling gel repaste help with this?
Do you guys have any other ideas for why this may be happening?

Are you on battery or AC?

EDIT: What is your ambient temperature?

definitely a over heating problem. Its downclocking itself to avoid damaging the silicon chips. Probably needs a good cleaning and a repaste. I wouldn't continue to use the laptop for games untill this problem is addressed do to the damage that such high temps can cause.

Looks like it's time to call Dellianware service...

I don't think I'd go through the trouble of re-pasting perchance the problem isn't with the paste.

If it was me, I'd repaste, it wouldn't be the first time a computer company did a poor pasting job. That is if you feel comfortable doing the task. One of the first things I do when I buy a new laptop is repaste with Arctic Silver 5. I usually test what the temps are before and after, and every time Its Lower.

That being said Aneap could be right and it could be a faulty component. If you call dell they will have you send it in and it will be gone for about 1-2 weeks in most cases.

Edit: In any case, Long time laptop Gamers and OC'ers will tell you that repasting is a must.

I've repasted desktop processors a few times. This is my first laptop and I haven't opened it up yet so I don't know what to expect.
I will repaste it myself though since I need the laptop for the entire summer; I feel pretty confident about it.

make sure ac is unplugged battery is out etc.. There are a few you tube videos about taking the laptop apart to change hdd so that could help you get started. Just keep track of where your screws go.
