I was under the impression that the i7 3720QM processor on the m14x r2 would be up to 3.5ghz?
Do I need to do something special to get it up to that?

[Redacted unnecessary taunting]....you can download throttlestop and use the bench mode to see the core speed. Also you can just run any sort of intense app that will stress all the cores like folding, prime 95, benchmarking apps like 3dmark11

2.6ghz is the normal/stable clock rate for the 3720qm. It can reach up to 3.5ghz with the turboboost feature, which is on by default. So basically if the conditions are good, your cpu can reach up to 3.5ghz.

Just to add more detail to that, is that the only time the clock speed can reach to 3.5Ghz is when the CPU turn all other 3 cores off, thought the speed will decrease if there are more core running, for example:
1 Core, the Turbo Boost clock speed will be 3.5Ghz
2 Cores, the Turbo Boost clock speed will be 3.4Ghz
3 Cores, the Turbo Boost clock speed will be 3.3Ghz
4 Cores, the Turbo Boost clock speed will be 3.1Ghz
However, it is less likely that the normal multitasking or app will use up to 4 cores at the same time, exclude game application, so most of the time you'll see the Turbo Boost clock speed at between 3.4Ghz ~ 3.5Ghz. -

You can also use the intel turboboost monitor to check on that, here is how you do it.
