as stated above, when I type the alien head (power button) flashes blue sporadically, but the laptop itself seems just fine.

    Anyone know what's up?

if the eyes are flashing i think it is hdd activity, but if the outerlayer flashes when you type, then it might be faulty.

    just my thought.

I had a thought; is your AlienFX set such that blue is the on-battery color? Have you got the notebook plugged in to AC power when this happens?

If yes to both, my hypothesis (as absurd as it may be) is that your power-connector or power port is loose and when you type, the force actually jiggles it out of contact for that short moment to make your Alien head flash into battery-color.

HDD activity will make the eyes blink but shouldn't flash different colors

Turn of your computer, remove battery and AC adapter, hold the power button for 10-15 secs, then power ON.

Try to create a new theme, make sure you select a different color than blue for both AC adapter and battery mode.

If it still turns blue, try to re-install Command Center.

it couldn't be that my scheme is changing
My color scheme has it set to green on AC power and red on battery power

I will try try the power drain thing though and post back

Neither of those worked, and now it's constantly blue, even when turned off the power indicator stays blue (and yes it's shut down, not hibernating)
