The U1 comes with one fan to put underneath the laptop, but the u2 comes with two. I'm pretty sure the m14x has to intakes, and the one exhaust out the back, so would the U2 work well for this?

Go for the U2. The U1 is perfect for the smaller M11x but the M14x fits better on the U2.

If you decide to get an M17x, the U3 fits perfect for that! :)

Yup me too, I have the U2 but didnt use the fan at all, because I'm too lazy to clean those dust out every now and then when it build up, though I also notice that if I use it without the fan, temp on my M14xR1 seem to be cooler than when I use the fan.
