My monitor doesn't have HDMI and I was surprised that the laptop had VGA instead of the bigger one (name escapes me). Something in the settings dialog made me think that the VGA port will only output the integrated graphics card, which would suck for gaming when I'm in desktop mode at home.

Nah Ive tried it, VGA works with the NVIDIA card. Btw I think youre thinking of either DVI or Display port. M14x has a mini display port (like the macbook pro), and DVI never really got popular.

Awesome thanks so much. I'm really looking forward to not buying a new computer for a long time.

Sorry to hijack the thread but since this is on the topic of VGA port of the m14x, I have a problem with it when plugged the VGA input of a projector to it.
I am trying to get my m14x to project some videos for my wedding. However when I plug in the VGA connector to my m14x, my optimal screen resolution is downgraded to 800 x 600. Checking the screen resolution settings under properties, the maximum is capped at 1024 x 768. The projector is capable of 1280 x 720 screen resolution when I try it with another laptop. However, try as I might, the maximum screen resolution with my m14x is only 1024 x 768 which is mind boggling since without plugging to the projector, the native laptop screen resolution is 1600 x 900.
Can any one give some advice on how to troubleshoot this problem? Thanks in advance! -
I think you can change them in the nVidia Control Panel, and about the projector stuff I think you can change them in the projector's menu found when there's any pluggin, just like one in my school.
If nothing plug, it will not showing anything until you plug it in, the control panel pop up allow me to adjust the setting. -

Dissapeard when I did a clean Win 7 install, but there must be an easier solution on this.
Btw. doesn't belong here, but I noticed that when you use two external screens + the internal one, the nvidia GPU is always activated. -
TIME TRAVEL THAT IS!
VGA port, will it output the NVidia card? Or just the Intel?
