On my m11x R1 I can go into the BIOS and tell it to not charge the battery. It's allowed my laptop to have a good working battery years after I've had it. I don't see that option in the BIOS for the m14x R2. Am I missing it, or is there a software program I can run to stop it from charging?

Have you tried with unlocked BIOS?

How do I unlock the BIOS?

I own an R1, but this should be the proper link -
I don't want to void my warranty
There used to be a software program that could be run, but I don't remember what it was that would stop the charging on some compatible computers. Does anyone remember what the name of that was? -
How about just removing the battery?
This won't void your warranty, and it seems like you will leave it plugged in all the time. -
That might be what I have to do. I was hoping for a better solution. The battery serves as a nice backup should the power go off or flicker which happens around my area.

i have been looking for a similar solution, and haven't been able to come up with anything. that unlocked bios supposedly doesnt even have an option to disable battery charging. but you could verify that if you would like. You could easily flash back to your stock bios if needed. I dont know about removing your battery, because what would u do in case of a power outage?

I can confirm that the R1 had this function with an unlocked BIOS

Yeah my m11x R1 has the option as well. The battery lasts about as long as when it was brand new and it was the primary computer I had for years. I wonder if they got rid of it to get more revenue in battery replacements or in hopes people would buy a new machine?

Don't worry too much about it, all of our latest platforms automatically stop charging the battery when it's fully charged to help improve its life time.
-
what i do is unplug my charger.

What Louis said! Anyway, if you're still feeling paranoid, then I suggest you take off your AW's laptop battery and then just buy a UPS that way you have a power backup in case of a power loss.
-
i feel like disabling battery charging is a necessary function simply for the fact of customization. I think maybe we should see if techs over at alienware can listen to the wants/needs of their customers and add the option in bios.

You can submit your thought in Ideastorm and if it gets enough votes it might be implemented. But really, would you like to restart your computer and access the BIOS to turn on/off the battery rather than have the laptop do it automatically for you?
-
accessing bios is incredibly simple and the whole process takes about 15 seconds tops. not a big hassle at all.
all im saying is having more options is never a bad thing. people dont have to use it if they dont want to. would be nice to have tho -
