I've read some reviews about the Y500 and I think it's a good machine but have also read that it doesn't have a great cooling system. Can't say anything about the Mac, I'm not a Mac user and have never been.
The Alienware 14 will let you game, work and study, it'll do everything it's supposed to do and will have the DELL coverage for any issues that may arise. I guess it all depends on your personal opinion at the end but I would just try reading some reviews about them all and make my decision based on that.

The Alienware 14 owner's lounge will give you a lot of information about the machine and what to expect. It's a very long read but you'll see everything there is about it from the users perspective.

And of course, if you decide to go Alienware, we are here to help out. Anything you need just let me or any of my partners know and we'll do our best to help.

Thats quite a range of laptops..
What do you need? For me the main thing would be battery life, as the alienware 14 is portable enough for me but for some it isn't. Can you live with the 3 hour battery life? If not, no alienware.

Are you going to game? Then no macbook air...

I've heard good things about the y500 too but have no personal experience.
