I had installed Win8 prerelease on my M14x and wasn't happy with it. But once the final version was out, I thought I could give it another chance. How I was wrong.
No integration between metro apps and desktop softwares. WMP on the desktop and a different music player for Metro? skydrive desktop software and a different app for Metro? Why couldn't you just make the Metro and desktop softwares talk to each other?
Forced login to install metro apps.
I am more of a keyboard centric person. I like to access things quickly using the keyboard while avoiding the mouse. Any time I need to find something in Win7, I press the windows key, type the name of the software and press enter. No mouse used in that and its quick. Now in Win8, hold windows + F, type the name, move the mouse to the right section and click on the icon i need. I don't need search to be so complicated. Win7 had it done perfectly.
A control panel for desktop and another for metro? Microsoft, are you nuts? Why couldn't you integrate them?
Two different versions of a program, one for metro and another for desktop??? Why couldn't you just integrate them to work together?
I liked my Aero interface. I bought an Alienware M14x to run it and any game that came its way and would like to keep it but Win8 doesn't even give you a choice.
I like to see my antivirus icon in the taskbar. In Win7, MSE is visible there. But in Win8, it doesn't show up and you can't even set up a system scan time easily as you could in Win7.
Three words: No Start Icon
I mean, don't get me wrong, I really like the windows 8 desktop and the metro interface is great in a tablet, but not on the same computer running at the same time. It all comes down to having to live with two OS running simultaneous (Thats how it feels atleast). If Win8 had just come without the Metro and with the start interface of Win7, it would just have been amazing. Or even if Metro was by itself on a tablet, it would have been very good.
I like my system simple without having to install any third party softwares to change it back to the way it looked in Win7. If i have to install something to change its appearance, I would rather go back to 7.
If my windows 7 disappeared and I was stuck with Vista or Win8 I would go with Vista. Hell, give me Win98 over it (Atleast for the foreseeable future).
Sorry Nokia, love your Lumia 920 phone, but after experiencing Win8, won't be going for it thought not the same OS.

Win + F and then type the search, pressing enter gives me a scrollable list that I can navigate with the arrow keys. Without using the mouse.
At least there is one thing that you perhaps can scratch from the list.

All of them are valid points, but they can be fixed very easily. You said you wish it didn't have a Metro, don't use it. I almost never use Metro, there are just couple of apps I like in Metro, like Netflix for example. Metro however loads on start up, which is lame, but I'll talk about it in a second. No Start button is ridiculous, so there are few programs out there (I don't call windows software apps out of principal!) that will put it right back where it belongs
I like Start8, it costs $5, puts a very nice, W8 styled, start button back and disables a default Metro start up. So when I start my computer it boots into the desktop normally, and if I ever want to use Metro, it's there.
W8 is noticeably faster on start up, and I like Wi-Fi management panel. I connect my 60" TV to the laptop and Metro is awesome on the Big screen. In my experience gaming performance is better in Windows 8 too. -
I can second this. Despite all the drawbacks its a screaming fast OS, even on a traditional HDD.
Also, I use the Metro Interface for opening programs all the time, just pressing Windows Key, entering the name, hitting enter, profit? Only works on installed programs though.
Also, Metro is a really fast alternative to alt+tab to hide what you're currently doing on the desktop

I currently have it installed on my secondary laptop as a break in period for me. It still annoys me a lot whenever I see the metro interface or the lack of aero but I might get over it after sometime. My biggest problem is still the lack of app integration between metro and desktop and the forced login to download a metro app. I got so used to going quickly to search in Win7 when I needed something that its feels like I am using Win8 with one hand tied behind my back. Lets see what they are going to fix in Win9. They better bring back Aero atleast for those who want it.

Very informative thread's name

I also use Start8 by Stardock. It`s really worth 5$! Looks like it is a standard Win8 feature.

You can launch programs that are not installed the same way : Just right click on the program's exe and pin it to the Metro screen ( I don't know how they named it in the English version, maybe Start Screen ). Then as usual Windows Key then type the name and enter.

After using Win 8 for a few months and finally starting to like it, I thought that I had to comment since I no longer believe everything I complained about when I started this thread. It still bothers me that desktop softwares and metro apps are not integrated and they have two versions of everything but the metro interface feels pretty good once you learn most of the commands. It would have been nice if Microsoft had an option to display the metro interface icons for people to learn. Shut down is still a bother but I keep pressing Win + F4 just to get it done more quickly. Some of the apps are good and the multi monitor taskbar is a relief in this era of multi display setups. A MSE icon would be a welcome also.
In the end, it does feel like a good interface and if someone has touch, it will be much better. I really don't miss the start button and actually like the start screen idea now. Microsoft should have made the transition slowly rather than just dump the interface on people and make them complain. -
I'm waiting for windows blue, maybe I'll give it a try then
-
there is news that msoft is soon launching a major update for win 8 which will have the start button back
-
Yeah
and the "leaked" screenshots of it all over the net are basically showing Start8 button...
-
basically what I meant with windows blue
and MS itself confirmed the return of the homebutton.
-
No, I know, I saw those rumors too, but, in all of them, sites like BGR showed screenshots of Windows desktop with Start8 button, and claimed those were leaked screenshots of the next Windows update, just kind of funny.
