ok, this is new to me. heard of it, but honestly never thought about it much till now.

i get the concept and all, but what parts within the laptop are utilized more when this is active?

    memory? gpu memory? cpu?

or is it strictly that the signal is sent out the laptop and to the receiving unit and then the receiving unit processes the details...

i think i have an idea of the answer, but getting input seems better at this time.

seems odd you couldnt, but it probably has something to do with what would equate to our FCC rules.

    fcc - federal communications commission.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent United States government agency. The FCC was established by the Communications Act of 1934 and is charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. The FCC's jurisdiction covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. possessions.

This is strange, cuz when I configure the m14x on aafes, it says that the wirelesshd is incompatible with my WLAN, no matter which wlan I pick and no matter which wireless hd package I pick.

    STRANGE?!?!

At least its an option. I don't even get the option out in Hong Kong. Lousy bias.

Does it require any system/hardware configuration to work? I thought all/most gen2 CPUs with integrated GPU can do it, you just need a receiver for the TV. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You are thinking widi or wireless display. This is wireless hd. Completely different.

Widi is dependent on the intel gpu, the right processor, a intel wifi card that does widi and a reciever like net gears push2tv.

Wireless hd needs it's own broacast chip, broadcasts on it own frequency, and requires a special reciever, either the vizio brick or get a tv with the reciever already built into it, which more will be coming out down the line.

Widi currently can stream 720 p, but are looking to move that to 1080 p with the new net gear push2tv 2000. There are some issues with drm and widi and streaming live action, there is latency and sometimes signal loss. However streaming games becomes a muddled nightmare because of the lag/latency.

Wireless hd streams a 60ghz signal, it was designed from the get go to do high def video transfers and because of the speed and power of the signal, it is
supposed to be able do lag free/latency free streaming of movies and games. It is not dependent on using intels chip as well. That's a big thing since you aren't held back by the onboard gpu. You can read more about it in the many wireless hd versus widi threads in the m17 forum. Like this one.

Ok thanks for the link, so my understanding now is that even though uk doesn't have wireless hd everyone has widi because of are cpu ?

That is definitely confusing. What's worse is that the dell customer service rep I was talking to thinks they are the same thing. I asked if the Australian model had an option for WirelessHD because I couldn't find the option during the checkout process, and he said "WirelessHD? Don't you mean Wi-Di?". And I said "I guess so", thinking I wasn't using the right tech lingo.

Turns out I was asking for the right thing after all.

I am interested in WirelessHD because I would like to game on my tv wirelessly. I know I can just move the laptop over to the tv and sit it somewhere, but I'd rather be able to keep it at my desk and beam the signal to the tv. Considering I'm spending $2000+ on a laptop, I thought I had might as well go all out and get the useful upgrades.

This laptop is not a desktop replacement but will act as a secondary gaming computer when friends come over or if the wife wants to play some fps. The only spare monitor in the house is my big tv and the feature would be awesome. Looks like it's not available to me.

So Wi-Di 2 with much less latency is not in the M14x? (excuse my ignorance - I don't even have a clue if Wi-Di 2 even exists in anything out yet.)

Is it possible to add WirelessHD at a later date?
