I have a Dell Tech. coming to my house on Monday to fix my M14x. It is having a LOT of crashes (BSoD/TDR error), temps all good etc. Seems to be a Motherboard/CPU issue which will be replaced.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if you guys have had this (or something similar) done at your home before? was it a good experience?

I really want this fixed as I can't play games at all. :(

    Regards,
    Carl.

Dell techs are contracted techs who fix all kinds of computers. I've had a few come for my old SXPS 16 laptops and they're pretty cool. They basically just come, fix your stuff, and leave. Not much to it ... I like watching them work though it's interesting. They know what they are doing, the only mishap I've had was when they didn't come with the proper motherboard for my laptop. Not their fault though, stupid Dell dispatched the wrong part.

I would say, watch closely as if something breaks it can be acknowledge there at the time it happens.

I've had them three times for my M17x R1, the first one that came had no experience with the M17x, took 2 hours for him to figure out how to take thing apart.... but he got it done (with my help) the other two were very good, they knew what they were doing and literally took less than 30 minutes to replace the SLI 280M I had.

I guess you'll know withing the first 5 minutes if he's good or not.

    Thanks for the reply, fred.

Xeneize, what was wrong with your M17x?

Okay, I was going to stand by him and watch anyway as I would like to see the 'guts' of this machine. :)

Watching is a good idea, interesting too. I had a tech round to fix the hinges on my M11x, he was a contractor too. Seemed like a nice guy, chatty and a bit nervous about getting a parking ticket, he had a tool roll, the replacement screen and put down an antistatic mat so seemed pretty professional...

Until the end when he made the noobiest of noob errors: he finished and had 2 SCREWS LEFT OVER.

He tried some line of BS that they may have fallen out of his tool roll, I firmly insisted he take the laptop apart again. As he did he joked he was always going to do so, not sure whether I believed that! Sure enough he had screwed in the lid with only 2 out of 4 screws. My advise is if you are unhappy about anything the tech is doing do not be afraid to ask, he also mentioned that customer satisfaction survey may come back to me so you can let them know that if they value their feedback then you expect things to be done properly.

    Ha, great post. :)

If I do see any left-over parts, I'll politely ask the Tech. to sort this out. But I'm sure this won't be the case....... Touch wood!

Good point about the survey thing. I'll write down the Techs name when we meet.

    Thanks.

Since I had this M14x, I broke 3 Subwoofer and got a HDD failure just 3 weeks ago, so that mean i got to see the tech take apart my M14x 3 times (the last time, it is a combine), and all of them are know what they doing, plus to get to the subwoofer mean they have to tear nearly everything apart to get to that part, so it's a good relaxation to watch the part is being taken off.

And to see what kind of part Dell put in, into your laptop as well, and plus you dont need to worry if they break it in process because if they do, you'll get another new one, lol.

I had a tech rep come to my place as well, just like everyone indicated, they are professionals, and thankfully not working directly for Dell...(3rd party contractors)

HOWEVER, i caution you, if you laptop is brand new and you must have a part replaced, make sure you drill dell so they DO NOT send you a refurbished part. Dell sent my M14x a refurb... i sent it back, along with my m14x
