does anyone know why they made the switch from aluminum to plastic on their laptops? it seems to be a decrease in quality..for what?

Most likely that plastic is easier to produce and cheaper to manufacture laptops with.
However it could also be to differentiate from the Xps range. -
"Plastics" can be a really wide range of materials with as wide of a range in terms of quality.
Some things are even only possible with plastic (e.g. the rubber surface).
In terms of physical endurance the M14X is still a superior product.
Long story short, whether or not AW/DELL using aluminium or plastic beeing a good/bad thing is rather a matter of personal preference, assuming of course, that it's done well in both cases. -
The M14x is still metal inside, unlike many laptops. It just has a plastic/rubbery layer externally
