I ordered an m14x yesterday and I'm starting to regret not throwing the extra hundred at the CPU to get an i7. Are there any pros to just having the i5? Will I notice any performance issues in high-end games because of the choice?
I mostly bought this game for SWTOR. Will I be able to max out the graphics?
Lots of questions. Thanks for taking the time to read them guys.

Call them and have it changed. Quad is better.

As an example. I'm playing Skyrim all on ultra exept shadows on high and comparing to others on the forum im guetting one of the perfomance on the m14x and I have i5 2410m. My CPU temps while gaming never go over 80-82C. Other than that, only played spacemarine which I had 60 fps pretty much always on max settings.
im super glad I got the i5...had the same debate as you but personally, it's just as good. Skyrim requires 4 cores, but I heard that alot of people with 4 cores, the first core was going to like 95C. my dual core has just as good perfomance and stays cooler.
But it's up to you
hope this helps -
100 extra is a really sweet deal, it's a no brainer. I've seen a lot of people on the m14x forums saying the core i5 was adequate enough for gaming and other tasks, since gaming doesnt really rely on a great cpu. That is somewhat true, but dual core i5's belong in macbooks and 700 dollar pc's. You seriously got a cpu that's in like a 700 dollar laptop for a laptop almost double the price. My advice is to call them ASAP to have it changed. A core i7 by itself will cost you 250-300. At least get the 2670qm, even if you don't use cpu intensive programs, it'll be more future proof. But its your call really, the i5 isn't horrible, just my thoughts.

I got an i5 and absolutely no heating issues =
-
Good stuff guys. I just called Dell and it is too late to change. So I'm just going to be happy with it.
In a year I'd say the i7 that are compatible with the m14x won't be that high, right? -
The only advantage might be that it does not get as hot as the i7, but my i7 has never gotten above 91 and that was after long gaming. Playing Skyrim on High for a couple hours and it never even gets above 86 degrees Celsius. So I really have no heating issues. Even if it does somehow melt inside my computer I have a warranty so I do not see any problem.

i got an i5, and bios a03 and it never goes over 75 degrees on the cpu and 64 degrees on the gpu
so if you have the i5 = no heat problems, more money for you
-
upgrade it to i7
-
skyrim isnt good example, it isnt as cpu intensive as crysis 2, battlefield bad company 2 or the witcher 2!
i think the i5 is more then enough, skyrim runs even faster on the i5 because its rather dual core optimized ( a proven fact, not a rumour) -
i7 for sure. no doubt about it. It shouldnt be too late to cancel if you have just ordered. Otherwise, threaten to cancel the whole thing and go elsewhere.
At the worst case, refuse delivery and re order the thing.
Theres a rule of thumb with high end equipment! Buy the best you can afford, then stick another £100 on top! Because there's always something out better tomorrow! and you want this to last for as long as possible! -
Try it. If it works for you good. You have 21 days to return it if it doesn't.

I had an m14x with quad and sold it. Yes the performance of the cpu is great but the heat and noise ruined it for me. I ended up having to lock the cpu at 2ghz to keep the heat and noise sensible and thus negating the benefits of turbo boost.
I have now bought a m11x for portable gaming. It is a low power cpu (i5 2457m 1.6-2.3ghz) but still has enough power to give me decent fps in:
BFBC2
SC2
DOW2
RUSE
COD BO
(havent tried bf3 or shogun 2 yet but imagine these will be playable if bfbc2 is)
If I bought another m14x I would definately get the i5. I am lucky enough to also own an m17x r3 with quad and that machine was made for a quad! no heat or noise issues due to the seperate fans for cpu/gpu -
Would the i5 2457m be good for Rift? Thanks
-
Well, i've seen BF3 & Skyrim running on an M11x! So i'd say Rift should play! But then i'd still recommend i7 to anyone! the speakers are good enough to mask the fan if you're playing loud!
-
if you're gaming using laptop speakers then I would say that the fan noise is the least of your problems. Get a headset
-
I have a headset! Just saying, if you dont, the speakers are pretty decent. not stunningly amazing. but decent!

bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
if you want an i-7 so bad, don't want heat or noise issues, and have cash to burn, get the m17x. Its a beast
i5 2430M?
