Sorry about all the threads. I think I realize/discovered a glitch, a rather miniscule, but still an imperfection for the perfectionist/meticulous power user. It has to do with an odd pixel in the top left corner of the display upon altering the transparent settings of the windows toolbar via windows 7. I want to confirm this is happening to all m14x users.
1. Right click on desktop, go to personlize:
![]()
2. Go to windows toolbar.
![]()
3. Go to transparent checkbox. Unclick it, and increase color intensity if you need to. You should see a tiny pixel on the TOP LEFT CORNER of your display. ODDLY enough, it seems to match the color of the windows toolbar you select (i.e. you select a non-transparent red toolbar, the pixel seems red!)

So this is obviously a software glitch, windows 7 display or intel HD.....
So, GSDR and I have already confirmed this.
4. HERE'S THE BEST PICTURE ON THE SPECK ONCE TRANSPARENT IS "CLICKED - OFF"

click on the image to maximize it to 100% size and you will see it.

I saw the point on the other post's you have made. And after trying what you ask I see no point on my desktop from any colors. I do not know what to say you are the first to have this problem. I would say call Dell and get service or return it which is what you have been saying in every thread.
-
Are you sure you don't see it?
Do you see it in my pictures atleast and understand what I am talking about?
This was on GDSR's computer also and if he lives in New Zealand so I wouldn't be surprised if its on every m14x.
You have to uncheck transparent and you will see it on the TOP LEFT CORNER. You can even check "transparent" again and it should disspear.
If you reboot it dissapears.
What intel HD drivers are you using? Do you have the 1600x900 display? -
I would think it is a windows 7 problem, drag a picture, screen border or even the mouse and see if it disappears.
For me it is only noticable when I only have the desktop, even if I drag the toolbar over there it disappears. -
So you were able to see it on YOUR m14x system also EREPHUS?
That makes 3 people. I bet this is a software issue, which is GOOD, because I would rather have that than a pixel physical issue.
Interesting. I'm so anal I notice these things.
Going to try updating to the 8.15.10.2361 intel drivers FROM THE 8.15.10.2342 and will update
BRB -
Yes I do. But it also disappears if something other than the background have to be drawn there.
So software issue, I'd guess on Windows 7.
This picture is taken by the screenshoot tool provided by Windows 7.
It is two pictures made into one. You see the dot on the right small picture and on the left picture an icon is over and the dot is gone.
-
Yeah, Erephus, I actually figured out that if EVEN IF You use the non-transparent toolbar, and the SPEC APPEARS, if you REBOOT, it dissapears.
Definitely some kind of software glitch of some-sort.
I uploaded a new pic above in my original post of the spec. I finally got it to show perfect on an image, check it out. Let me see what these new intel drivers do. -
A white dot may appear on the top-left corner of the screen when an Aero theme is selected and “Enable transparency” is unchecked
Oh, and reading the Microsoft paper on this I actually find it quite funny that basic vs other version of Windows 7 shows this glitch during different cuircumstances. -
Tried a bunch of different colors and settings, I never got one
-
EREPHUS, ++++1000,00000 points for finding that!!! holy crap! So it is windows!
So do the m14x users who "claim" it does not happen to them have something other windows 7 installed besides home or ultimate or something?
It's such a small pixel that I could understand most people over-seeing it. But it's definitely there, 3 people already confirmed and I bet its on the others too.
Ever more so dissapointing though, gaming on battle field Bad Company 2 on medium graphics 1600x900 and the laptop gets upto 100C and freezes.
Oh lord, so these are the horror stories I hear about alienware eh? First time product user, and only had mine for a few days and I'm already getting nervous. -
It states may appear, and I had to change wallpaper before I noticed it. Before I changed wallpaper I did not see the white dot that I see now when I do those steps.
So I guess it is not reproducable all the times one tries. -

I'm guessing that person did not update their drivers, did not plug in their laptop, wasn't even using the nvidia GPU, had the laptop vents being smothered like a prostitute's mouth, was using BIOS A05, and probably have so much pr0nz on their laptop that they have 50 viruses.
Even more likely scenario, that person probably doesn't even own an m14x. -
I even already found a bug with the windows 7 desktop (although it seems someone else did because it was posted on microsoft.com)
How dare you question my integrity, I have owned multiple laptops and build gaming computers from scratch.
The laptop is plugged in, the drivers are updated to the latest version, the Bios is a05, and there is no pron on this computer. -
Maybe everyone else who hasn't seen this error yet is like me and has the toolbar at the top of the screen?
-
I have another copy of windows 7 ultimate actually from another computer....
Any idea if this will void the 21 day return policy if I install?
I want to test this issue and solve it possibly.
Let me know if anyone knows if this will void anything, please no responses from people who want to flame and or be e-warriors. -
someone with a hundred posts calling someone with 40 a newbie, Hhhmm. Not very nice since you have been breaking the forum rules posting the same problem everywhere, which is a no no.

Looking at one-perspectively is always easy, but we must look at the whole picture intelligently.
And can we please stay on track here, these threads are very specific and they actually come up on google searches so future m14x will benefit from the information accrued on the heat of this machine and this graphically display issue, which seems to be a design flaw per Microsoft. -
Well for one thing your temps are way to high. My system runs at 83 degrees while gaming or test with Prime 95. It idles at 51 as I type this. You may want to re paste or check with support as those temps are too high.

-
This is the temp after I exit the game and have a little break (Now) before I jump into another match.
The picture above is taken after updating to BIOS A05, and tbh it never go past 98/99, but the pic in the link is taken with BIOS A04, it actually never reach 100 for the CPU itself though, but if you look at the 'Package" (Which I really have no idea what it is) it shown to reach 100C.
One more thing I'm not trying to join the argument or some might call it "Troll" but I just want to show and to my curiosity on M14x's design - is it design to run hot or something? -
I don't test temps playing games I use Prime 95. Which puts the system thru a much more standard test. These are my highest temps before the fan brings them back down.

GSDR, add me on Battlefield BC2 my username is XxAlbertoxX
alienwolf, those are pretty damn good temps, but weren't you on test 1 only? I used prime95 to bench my gaming computer all the time, and aren't the max temps hit around the 1 hr mark which is deeper into the blend?
I also wonder if the CPU will get hotter during gaming because of the added heat generated by the GPU usage which is avoided in CPU stress testing like prime 95. Just wondering though, those are really good temps. -
Oh, and back to the original point of the thread. We have all done the research now, and know the white pixel is the product a bug in windows 7 aero theme.
Surprisingly, I thought it might just be the windows Home 7 basic that the Alienware ships with, so I formatted the local C drive today to test it with my other copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. The results:
SAME THING!!! Once transparency is checked off, same white pixel.
I know I wasn't crazy lol, so much for looking like a newb using a flawed wall paper
Anyway, now I just have to find a fix for this!!! Where and how?? how could Microsoft have such a Common, annoying BUG since 2010, and it's still NOT FIXED on one of their most popular operating systems that powers the majority of the computers (and this bug is on all manufacturers not just AW) across the world???
Sigh* -
I use the windows toolbar on the left side of my screen.
It will hide the pixel, but my intentional use for it is that I have more height to be used for program, ex firefox, but I also can have more icons on the quick start field without sacrificing height.
It's a win win situation. -
And a little off topic - in the screenshot is that 8 hours and 31 minutes your battery life? -
I'll run a 1 hour prime and post, also no the battery life I get is 1 hour 40 minutes as I run on max all the time.
-
Your ss desktop is rainmeter isnt it... what skin is that?
Edit: I see you're also from SD. How does that Momentus XT work? I was thinking about nabbing one. -
OK, so, does anyone who has the m14x NOT have the white pixel upon "unclicking" transparency?
It seems like everyone who had the m14x thus far had the white pixel. Interestingly though, if you reboot the computer, the "white pixel" dissapears.
m14x Owners: Testing a glitch in here, come in.
