Hey guys, So I just got this laptop about a week ago now and yesterday I decided to try out one of the new beta drivers (290.36). When I chose to install them I chose clean install which first deleted my initial drivers completely before trying to install the new ones. The problem is that while the drivers were completely uninstalled there was an error given that the setup could not detect my NVIDIA graphics hardware. Now all I see is Standard VGA Graphics Adapter in my device manager with the yellow exclamation point on it. I have tried using my resource cd that came with the laptop to try reinstalling the original drivers as well as reflashing the bios as I heard that works but both have not allowed me to reinstall the drivers. It is as if the graphics card has disappeared completely and not even detected by the hardware. Please help guys![]()

I've now even tried reverting back to factory state using alienrespawn but that doesn't help either. I am still getting a yellow exclamation mark under the GT555m in device manager. Please help

first install this (the top one):

Hmm, if then that weird because mine's ok though not to mention that I even have my GPU OC heavily, or is it just happen to those just bought the laptop recently? Because mine is like around 6 month old now.

I just got my laptop 2 weeks ago.with a07 bios.
I called Dell tech this morning and they are still working on the m14x. So far they have 2 hours in to it.
They tried uninstalling and drive sweeper. he said if what his doing doesn't fix it. I would need to re image the m14x.

We just did a re-spawn loading BF3 if it freezes, they can return all my monies or get a new laptop. See what happens. Sorry to jack your thread, but I figure someone else or you might find the info helpful.

Hi there,
got the same problem and called immediately alienware. They told me that i'm not the first case and that they are searching for a solution.
If someone has an idea pls tell us poor aliens
The things i tried:
- Modified Inf from laptopvideo2go.com
Got till driverinstallation which after a short while fails
- Installing the drivers from resource disk
No Luck
- Installing the Drivers (both, beta and the other) from AW-Homepage
Same as with original drivers from nvidia
- Flashing the bios to A05
No Luck
- Searching google
Found this Website -
I've been having a similiar problem with the m14x not finding a particular PCI device. I had to wipe clean my comp not to long ago. Reinstalled everything fresh on it. But cannot figure out what device is doing it... Either way, maybe it's different for each system?

I will be returning the m14x still have the issue.I will be getting a different laptop or just build up my desktop.

Here's a FIX! Worked for me! I found it on this site. Credit goes to Jovan for PREZ (thank you!) when I was having a heart attack from this issue @.@ Oh and before you do any of this just go to the Nvidia site and download the latest driver from them (it's the one I'm using)
OKAY!
1 Uninstall ALL things from Nvidia
2 Look through your Program files and Program Files x86
3 Delete all Nvidia folders found there.
4 Run a driver sweeping utility to get even MORE stuff out of there. I think I used CC cleaner. (I actually didn't need to do this at all just go to every single Nvidia folder or file and delete)
-Reboot-
5 Click Run and type in Regedit
6 Delete Nvidia file from HKEY_CURRENT USER>Software>Nvidia Corporation
7 Now open KLEY_CLASSES_ROOT and find all Nvidia files there and uninstall.
8 Reinstall an Nvidia driver at this point and it should work! You can tell if it works if it actually starts downloading the driver. When it doesn't detect it, it doesn't even try to install. -
sry mate doesnt help me
i think after a fresh reinstall of windows there cant be any nvidia related stuff...
I have an idea: Pls, all people with this kind of problem... which version do you got? 1,5GB or 3GB?
*edit* The funny thing is that, as HAK Devil previously mentioned, even if you restore via alienrespawn to factory settings the gt555 is not proper recognized by the system. -
So after about 2 hours on the phone yesterday with Alienware they have concluded that the video card itself is probably damaged and will be sending out a tech next week around Wednesday to replace the entire motherboard for me. I'll let you guys know as the situation develops but this doesn't bode well for something I only got about a week ago
-
I think i will send it back to Dell and get my Money back. This can't be. So much People complainig about it... But on the other hand.. Is there any alternative to the m14x?
-
also I see you live in Canada by law you have 30 days to return or exchange for a working unit. United States has 15 day, california(where I live) 21days. If you really want to keep it I would ask for a new M14X -
What version do u got? 3gb or 1.5? I've looked at the specs of the gt555 at nvidias website. There are only specs up to 1.5 Gb. My Idea is that the 3gb Model is modified by Dell and maybe they did something wrong...
*edit*
I've spoken with Dell again and they confirmed my Suspicion: the 1.5gb Version doesnt have this problem. I've ordered a technican whos changing my 3gb into a 1.5gb until they've got a Solution. -
3gb (of ddr3) is kinda useless, anyhow. you'll be bandwidth-constrained for any large texture or data moves. 3gb is totally a marketing gimmick.
-
Yeah i know that, but I've got a voucher for exactly this System and couldnt change anything.... and if you ask me, why shouldnt i take the bigger One if its for free
-
Just chiming in here......................

Hola hay alguien que hable español?
Bye -
Just want to let you guys know that I had my motherboard replaced and everything has been fine since and I was able to upgrade my drivers to 290.53 as well. Everything is good for now but I'll let you guys know if anything changes
-
Hi there, i just ordered an m14x on friday (1.5g VRAM), im in the clear right?
-
Hi, my m14x was made around mid december but I wasn't able to use it till jan. It shipped with A06 bios. now i'm curios if this problems still persists? I want to update my driver but i can't risk having the same sort of problem as opetron and others. (im from PH so i'm assuming warranty will be more troublesome since there is no alienware here and i don't plan on returning the laptop).
Any update on this? a permanent fix perhaps? im still running on stock drivers. I will post which one when i get home. other comp specs are in my sig. -

Hi gents,
Just thought I should post back here as I (unsuprisingly) had the same issue and just got it sorted.
It is *not* a hardware issue, how can it be - it is purely a software detection issue due to the Optimus "stuff" not presenting it correctly or the Dell drivers not having the correct identification codes in the driver.
anyway - I got mine delivered last night. Naturally it runs like a piece of crap because it has all of Dell's crap installed and the resolution/fonts never look quite right when Dell ship these things imo, so I always blat them and start fresh.
But before I blatted it I loaded on WoW/SWTOR and a couple of others just to see the perf. All runs perfectly.
Reinstall from scrach and all drivers load correctly apart from the Nvidia as the installer can't find compatible hardware. Tried a bunch of stuff:
1) the dell stock driver off download site
2) the dell beta driver off the download site
3) latest WHQL Nvidia driver off their site
4) latest beta Nvidia driver off their site
all say the same thing, no compatible hardware. So I head over to www.laptopvideo2go.com (which is where I used to get my laptop drivers back before Nvidia started including mobile drivers in the main builds) and pull the latest beta driver (295.18) and modded inf.
Extract the driver, copy the inf over the stock one and then it magically recognises the hardware. I expect Dell did their age old trick of taking a stock GT555m and changing the IDs so it is a "M14x GT555m" - which means that nothing will pick the damn thing up now.
anyway - thats how you get back up and running chaps. If you don't want the latest beta I'm sure the latest WHQL driver will also work.
Have fun
p.s - Optimus works perfectly in case you were concerned. -
Thats fantastic news, are you using 1.5 or 3.0 gigs on your Card? -
I'll go ahead and post my experience on this issue as well from the other thread:
-
looks like weve finally got a fix for this issue, follow the thread gt555m not picking up card
-
I think I may be having the same problem. Basically I just reinstalled Windows on a new hard drive Sunday. And all my drivers are up to date but I keep running out of memory during games. I have the 3Gb GT555m and BF3 will crash (Freeze and must be stopped through task manager) And so will Minecraft (lol) Both occasionally show that the GPU has run out of memory.
