I am thinking about replacing my desktop and my laptop into one unit. I currently have a custom desktop and a m11x R1. The m14x seems like a good compromise of power and size. So my questions is, is the GT555 going to be powerful enough to game on a external monitor that is 1080P (24inch Dell) (Cryis 2, Starcraft2, BF3, HL2) or am I going to be unhappy with the output.
Thanks Shawne

it will be enough to game, but you will be running at mid- high settings. At least that is the story for my 9800m gt plugged into a 1080p monitor.

You will probably be unhappy. You will get unplayable frame rates on many of those newer games on high settings, and will have to drop to low-med to get decent fps.
You should look at an m17x (with best GPU you can get) if you want a desktop replacement capable of gaming at 1080p. It has the same CPU's as the m14x, much better graphics performance, and isn't that much more expensive. -
The M14x is enough, but if you want really UBER EXTREME details then no. stick with the desktop.
I have the same situation, since I am just a casual gamer, I sold my m11x, and currently selling my desktop, and just got the m14x.. It will be a replacement for me. -
I had the same dilemma with my M11x, which is why I ended up giving it to my GF and getting something more powerful. I wanted to keep it so badly, but I do 80% of my gaming on an external monitor. The M14x will probably do OK, but not at the highest settings as others have said. I'd go with an M17x R3 if you plan to mostly do your gaming on 1080p. Aside from the added size and weight, the M17x R3 is a pretty good choice especially when you consider its stellar battery life, due to graphics switching etc.

at least. -
I don't want to have two systems anymore, just too much trouble tring to keep them synced up The m17 is just too big, I don't want the extra weight, and I need it to be more portable. I was looking at the Sager NP8130 its a little bigger, and I lose some of the nice AW features that I have grown to love on my m11x. (keyboard, the cool design) So I am a bit torn. Can I live without all the gaming settings turned up? I might be able too.

I think the m17xr3 only weighs a couple pounds more than the m14x.

Portability is about more than just weight. The m14x is regular laptop size, but the m17x is a pretty big behemoth of a computer. Even if the m17x some how weighed less than the m14x, I would still consider the smaller m14x to be more portable.

To be honest with you, the m14x weighs and sized roughly the same as a 15.6" Sager 8150. If I was you I would just go for a Sager with the 6970M. You not only spend less, but you get a true high-end gaming laptop that is still portable.
Alienwares are known to be on the biggish side. the m15x was actually not that smaller and lighter than the m17x R2. In fact, the m15x was around the size of an 17.0" Elitebook 8740w. The m14x is smaller than the m15x, but it is still the size of a regular 15.6" laptop. -

I just got my M17x R3 yesterday, and IMO I'm actually here to tell you that it's pretty darn portable. It's a lot slimmer than the M15x i briefly had, and the weight is pretty much the same around 9lbs give or take a few. Order one, worst case return it lol.
m14x on a external monitor at 1080P (will it be enough)
