How come i see some m14x r2 owners here complain about performance dropping or throttling when their gpu reaches 65c or higher but mine does not?

My gpu temp went as high as 68c straight for 3 hours while playing crysis 2 and it never throttled and performance never drop. What is causing the others to throttle even at 65c? Is it because their cpu temps reaches super hot temps?

I mean what is the beginning temperature of the cpu celcius suppose to be to start throttling the gpu at 65c? My cpu temps was at 82c and gpu at 68c and i don't see any throttling or performance drop and the palm rest area and keyboard area is still cool to the touch.

Ivy quad i7 throttles at 95, your temps are good

Hey digital, i know your one of the guys that did some repastin to improve temps, I'm sure you know what i'm talking about the other r2 users saying they experience throttling when their gpu temps reaches 65c or something when playing games, but i'm confuse because my gpu temps even reach 68c and my cpu temp went as high as 82c and i didn't experience overheating or throttling.

What could possibly be the reason why other users have this issue even at early 65c? Is it because of a defective hardware? I mean I don't think we can blame the heat now as the cause of throttling because my celcius temps are even higher and i don't experience throttle. There has got to be some explanation.

Remember my cpu temps for straight 3 hours was 82c and gpu temp at 68c and no throttling whatsoever, while some users reports throttling at 65c gpu temps and their cpu only reaching 70-75c. Mine is 80c+ on gpu and 68c on gpu and no throttle.

This is really confusing and I hope someone from Dell/Alienware or a techsavy could explain this confusion.

    Wish I understood...

My findings were that the IC Diamond on my r2 definitely improved all-around performance. See the thread for an infographic.

It seems the factory paste doesn't dissipate heat as effectively as IC Diamond. Meaning, after a CPU spike, the temp will not drop as quickly before the next spike. It also doesn't keep the actual running temps as low. So before repaste the min core temp might be 70, while after repaste min temp is 50c or so! So the CPU operates at overall lower temps AND the minimum temps also drop radically. Seems like the CPU is allowed to really "breathe".

Because they share the same heatsink, the GPU inherits some of the heat from the CPU. So again, the repasted GPU temps drop in two different ways: The actual direct reduction, plus the fact that less heat is passing over from the repasted CPU.

Once you turn turbo off and prop it up, it''s a beast. But you can leave turbo on all day long.

The throttling on my r1 was extremely obvious. Like the fps being choked over and over. Core temps were up to 99c. I think you can even see the pattern if you watch a monitoring program.

So I don't know - Maybe the throttling is tied to the core's temp, not the GPU?

The bottom line is that my r2 rebuild and tweaking took my GPU temps from 68c under stress to 59c. That definitely gets me away from the entire range of rumored throttling limits.

    Debunk!

Its not rumored, its fact. Mine will throttle at 65-68 C and it really sucks. It won't throttle if I don't OC but I'll end up having to repaste anyway as the OC potential is just too great.

but the r2 is wayy different, you have the r1?
