This is in response to an earlier thread, http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/m17x-no-power-issue.661220/, that had this exact same issue.

I fixed the issue by adding a new capacitor near the DC in port. There are two free pads where you can put a 25V 470uF, or there about, capacitor. This fixed the power on issue for me. It seems that the high instantaneous current surge on power on dips the voltage below what is required by the subsystems.

Might be helpful for other people having problems turning on their machine, if they've tried everything else (changing battery, charger, etc).

Same problem here but on a Alienware 17 R5 Ranger 2014. Drained the battery, do it every month with a 10% charge left it shuts down so all was good. Powered it on and it wont start the alienware logo would flash a bit then die no post, quarter fan spin and no post. So I took it apart put everything back in thinking reseating Ram, HDD might fix the problem it didn't problem was still there. So took the GPU out and voila the system post again now working fine even stressed tested the whole thing for hours still works nothing died, on battery off battery it just works. Could the GPU have a short in it is that a possibility? even with a dead GPU the system should boot post and at least show signs of working HDD anything no beeps? I am correct in my diagnosis or there is still a problem in the motherboard?.

    Specs

    Alienware 17 R5 RANGER
    880M GTX 8GB
    1 TB HDD, 512GB SSD
    16GB DDR3 1600Mhz
    240 watts power supply.
