    Dear Villosa,

I entered today in the club of M17XR3 owners. What can I say, a great machine with a damn problem, the 900p standard screen. I do not like it at all, even if I knew it was not a good screen.

The problem is that I could not make a choiche on it. My laptop comes from a Dell Outlet with a price of 1.2k. I got an high spec config that would regularly cost 1.7k on the dell website and, guess what, it is not a random refurbished machine. It is just new, new new, and I saved more than 500 Eur.

The plan was to upgrade the screen to the 1080p after, and I am wondering if you can give me an hand...need a guide to disassembly the screen, and a place where I can buy the LCD non 3D or 3D.

mah baby is powered by AMD Radeon, I thought the GFX card would not be mandatory in deciding what screen to get!

Did a little digging and found the post by Malibal.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...utiful-b173hw01-v5-upgrade-5.html#post7949438

"V.4 is a 90% NTSC Color Gamut Glossy Display
V.5 is a 72% NTSC Color Gamut Matte Display"

The V4 is still superior to the V5 due to color reproduction and intensity.

    V5 will read as AUO159D
    V4 will read as AUO149D

Haven't been keeping up with the 3D stuff but that might be why. The screen you linked to is 3D and I'm almost certain 3D is only available with Dell NVIDIA GPUs at the moment.

Technically, this screen is equipped with a 3d receiver that works only with nvidia graphic cards.

It means that you can use it with ATI cards, but you cannot plug in the 3d receiver.

Basically I have to pay for a component (the 3d receiver - 10$) and a cable (the connector cable - 8$) that won't be plugged in.

Still debating if I want the v5 because its matte. If all you see is glare the extra gamut doesn't make a bit of difference.

Well the fact that whether the screen is matte or gloss doesn't make a difference as the glass that goes in front of the display assembly will always be there. The default panel in the M17x R3 is matte, just the outside glass that makes it glossy.

I've done the same mod as well. I ordered a 1080p LG screen off ebay. Thing is fricking beautiful. the stock 900p screen was a horrible choice, i should have never got it. the contrast on that thing is just horrid.

anyways, when i took out the panel i used a razor blade and paint scrapper/spatula thing (i forget what they are called) to separate the plexiglass from the lcd screen. man was that a pain. I don't know how i pulled it off because i couldn't even get to the bottom side of the lcd because of plastic blocking it. It's really easy to scratch the plexiglass front so if you try this be very careful, it can go very wrong very quick.

So now im at the point with everything back together but the plexiglass isnt glued to the lcd anymore. on one hand its good because if dust gets in there i can just bend the glass forward and get it out, on the other its bad because well, it's not glued down anymore! i'm wondering if i should try to glue it back together and if so, what do you think would be a good adhesive to use? thanks in advance for any replies and if you have any questions about how i did it just ask.

3m double sided tape is your best bet. It will be similar to what Alienware uses.

You cannot buy the plexiglass separately sorry to say, it just does not exist period.

I have looked high and low as i was interested in do this mod on a few different alienware's .

The only way you can replace that glass is to literally purchase another screen assembly .

There was a company i think located out of China who had some M15x shells for just the glass and the back frame etc but that is the closest i have ever seen to just the glass being available on its own and those were nothing more then system pulls taken apart.

dang, its cracked in the corner, I dont mind buying a whole screen assembly so long as theres no screen and the plexiglass doesnt come pre-stuck on...

I wonder if its possible to get the plexiglass cut to shape and printed - hmm where to look though...

Shozuki it is actually not very hard, don't worry.
    You need several things though.
    1. Measure the current glass thickness
    2. Measure it's dimensions (exactly, to the last mm)

After you've done thins, go to here for 2mm or here for 3mm.

From them you will buy quite big portion of the glass. After you get it, go to a laser cutting place and give them the glass and the EXACT dimensions (this is usually done in Autocad, it is very easy to draw) and they will cut it exactly.

All of this costs here (in Europe, Bulgaria) less than 20$. I've done this before for modding and for the alienware it's not different

edit: found something in the USA that provides the materials and service. Go here. They have a minimum of 25$ so this is the amount it will everything cost you. The material you need is plexi, transparent, clear and the thickness you measured

Oh my god. I'm so sorry guys! I've been so busy with completing a project for the company and have been neglecting the forum LOL. As you can see, I haven't been on much but that will change hopefully by the end of the month when the project completes.

I'll try to sign in as much as I can to answer questions.
