So I got my GPU replacement today.

A brand new, spanking 580m - installed your bios; all was fine yesterday, today got my first BSOD again.

The heatsinks got replaced as well, repasted both CPU and GPU with IC DIAMOND. The temps at max load are 65'C at most (going between 57-61'C at most times, in Witcher 2 or Battlefield 3).

    What the hell?

Dragging NVflash.exe to cmd doesn't do anything for me. Can anyone help me out with this?

I've tried this fix as well as the fan throttle for hitting the throttle at 78. It seemed to work for a while (I was able to play games for several hours after the initial fix), but after I shut down the machine and started up the next day, it was back to the black screens and restarts. The problem seems to be getting worse instead of better, as now it will die as soon as I try to start a game, rather than when it hits a temperature threshold. I called Dell but they won't help without charging me because this unit was actually a replacement for another M17xR3 that I had problems with for 9 months before they got sick of my calls and did a complete swap.

    Any ideas/suggestions are appreciated

Unfortunatly my R3 was the same. After two new cards (and of course a clean install of windows) they offered a MB replacement. It may well have fixed it but since I'd already had the SDD fail on me (obvious fault reported in the dell diags) I asked for a replacement. Got this R4, but replacement is totally at their discretion so be nice ;)

    Good luck.

Some people reported getting random shutdown while using HWINFO in the other thread.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...e-fixing-m17x-r3-580m-thermal-throttling.html

I started getting the same, while using the 920v bios.

Not as random, as the system shuts itself down at ca. 70-71' C.
What the hell? It didn't used to.

I was afraid I borked my GPU or something... How to prevent doing it? How to even uninstall HWiNFO? I only got it as a simple executable.

Do I just delete it? How do I remove its effects permanently?

    edit:
Ok, I flashed back to regular, not overvolted bios; my PC doesn't shut itself down for ca. 30 mins.

I OC'ed a bit, with HWiNfo uninstalled, ran fine, upped the clocks and once the temps have reached 70-71'C - boom! Shutdown.

I am rightfully scared now - any help appreciated!

Seems like we're in the same boat here.

Did you have any luck fixing this issue?

Hate to say this but the fix is to stop using GTX 580m's. To cut a long story short, it's a defective card, and they'll die on your time and time again. After 4 dead 580m's with my R3, I decided enough was enough, and got a 780m. It's not an officially supported card, but with a modded driver it works far better than any 580m. Far more power and far more reliability. It's a solution you should definitely consider :)
