Hello, i've got an M17x R2. It's a really great computer, even after some years, because I don't play lots of games.
However, there's a problem: sometimes when I disconnect and reconnect it to the power source, it says on BIOS that the adapter is not Dell's. I replaced the charger with a Delta one recently, which should be original.
However, the main issue is that, sometimes, when this happens, the system is really slow. Not sure, but it seems like the CPU is locked to slow frequencies or something like that.
Do you have any idea of what could the issue be?

Your laptop is running in low power mode so as to not damage the unsupported adapter. This involves throttling the CPU to run slower and as a result draw less power.

    The part numbers for the official 240W adapter for the M17x R2 is PA-9E / J938H / Y044M / U896K / J211H / Y044M.

Check if youre adapter is one of those. If it is, the ID line in the adapter or your laptop is damaged. If you're getting the same result with both your adapters the fault most likely lies with your laptop. Check to see that the power jack at the back of your laptop is not loose or damaged.

The adapter is official, just checked the number.
How can I check the power jack? :(

Well easiest way would be to move the connector tip slightly in any direction to see it its being detected. If it works then you know its a faulty jack and will have to be repaired.

Dont use force though, if by chance it isnt the jack you dont want to damage it.

I'm downloading a Live system to try that since i'm running a system that has issues displaying the battery, however I hope that's it. I tried disassembling the laptop to reach the jack, and it seems well-soldered, however that doesn't mean that this is not the issue.
I'm not good at soldering, but I'm sure I can find someone.

If it's not the jack, what can it be? A motherboard issue?

Update: I just tried the old Flextronics PSU and... it works!
Now i'm not sure what the issue is. The Delta one is new (I'll contact the seller), however i had the same problem, sometimes, with the old one.
I think that's not a jack issue because i tried several times disconnecting one and connecting the another, and it really seems like the Delta one has issues, while the Flextronics doesn't. I won't just use this one as "final one" because it had the same issue (that's why I bought the Delta)

Mine is flextronics (240W slim brick) and its fine. Didn't know there was a delta one. You sure its 240W? or is it 180W?

Yes, both are 240W, just checked.
How often do you unplug it and carry around? Because mine is fine as long as it's plugged in, problems arise when I carry it with me.

Delta and Flextronics will both work with the R2. I moved my R2 around all the time, though both of my adapters were Flextronics.

What if I use an M18x charger? It's 330W but as far as I know it's not a problem as long as the voltage is the same. If the problem is the overheating due to having too much work, that may solve the issue. Or maybe i'm just unlucky?

Have you checked your power profiles? Maybe your CPU is limited to lowest clocks when on battery?

You can force it to allow higher clocks on battery mode, maximum processor power state to 100 in the settings.

    330W supply should work fine.

But I think that's something that's not handled by the OS.
When I boot with the power unplugged, it's slow. If i plug it after that, it stays slow until next reboot.
When I boot with it plugged in and I unplug the power, it stays fast until I reboot.

That makes me think that the problem is in BIOS or something else, maybe there's a EEPROM that can be written by the Alienware application, just like the AlienFX ROM that keeps the colors?

It looks like a problem with the motherboard,
What bios version are you using?

I had a similar issue with my PSU when I forgot to connect the ID wire within the power supply correctly. This lead to my machine running slower than dirt and not charging the battery. Is your cable worn or anything like that? If so I bet that's the issue.

Wow, that's exactly my issue, however I never opened my PSU in past. I did now to check that, but the ID cable seems to be well soldered to the board. Now I'm back to the Delta PSU and it works well again. I really don't get it. Could it be some sort of electrostatic issue or a capacitor? Because it seems like, after a while, problem on charger solves itself :\
