    Hi guys,

I'm stumped about something. Every time my screen enters 3D mode for a game, the screen goes to minimum brightness. In the 3D mode, you lose the ability to change brightness settings, which I know is normal. My M17x r3 did not have this issue of the screen dimming. Is this the 'lightboost' tech not working?

Any ideas for what I could try to resolve this issue?

    Thanks!

Yeah, it's the lightboost display causing it, as designed I was told (eventually).

I noticed the same when I got this R4 to replace my R3. I saw that even the bios progress bar was dim so I called them up and got it replaced. No difference, although Dell released a new bios that caused the progress bar to appear bright. Just a cosmetic change to the graphic.

I use the in-game brightness or gamma settings to compensate. Some games are almost set to the highest! Windows brightness control has never worked for me in games - they appear to bypass it.

    Hope it works for you.

Unfortunately that's how it works, you can use MickeyD's suggestion and change the brightness settings in the game though.

    Darn. That's pretty disappointing.

Thank you both for your replies.

And now I begin to research if there's a way to force the machine to stay max brightness at all times.

That's just the way it works. It's also like this as far as I know for most 3D Vision 2 monitors out there. The monitor does go dimmer but does offer a more pleasant 3D experience compared to the R3 version without lightboost. The R3 was brighter, yes, but the R4 does have less 3D anomalies like ghosting.

Very true, I neglected to think about things like ghosting. Knowing that most 3D vision 2 monitors do this also makes me feel better. (I'm sticking with my AW2310's for awhile then)

Thanks for the info! I feel better about this now.

PS. I noticed in your sig you have the 780M in your r4. Was that difficult to setup? Did you lose 3D capability? (On my R3 I would have lost 3D capability if I upgraded from 580 to 680)

Setup wasn't difficult. Much less difficult than a 780m in the M17x R3. And yes I've lost 3D. I have a 3D TV which is much better and I don't game in 3D so nothing's really lost for me.

Hi i have an ASUS VG278 and had the same issue with screen dimming. But recently, some folks are saying the brightness doubles when 3D is turned on .. o_O what am i missing?

Before starting this thread, that was my understanding of what lightboost is supposed to do... boost the light.

I wonder if this is an nvidia driver issue or something to do with the the screen itself.

Check out lightboost technology on their web site to see how it works.

Basically it's hardware. The screen/panel supports it and the matching 3d Vision2 glasses are brighter than the previous generation when viewing 3D content. It is supposed to counteract the dim screen when 3D is turned on. I've had both and honestly, not a lot of difference for me...

I am still using the first 3D vision glasses. They did not give me 3D vision 2 glasses with the refurb (that replaced my R3) - was this something they should have done?

Yeah, I got new ones with mine but maybe they didn't know about the V2 thing? . I've seen this before with refurbs. I reckon a lot of people fail to return them with the machine.

They both work but lightboost is V2 glasses (and possibly the emitter but I don't think so) specific.

I had an R3 and this one replaced it from dell so I had both glasses for a while. It is a little brighter and you CAN see the keyboard much better. They are also slightly larger area.

Thanks for the info, I'll give AW a call soon and see if I can trade in these V1 for a pair of V2.

    Cool, good luck.

Please post back if you get some, with your opinion ;)

I got a second set from eBay but they ain't cheap. You have to search out the glasses only as most sellers are the full kit with emitter (and even more expensive!)

Well, I tried calling them and they told me they only have one pair of 3D glasses for all their computers, then he messed up my service tag so now it doesn't exist and I can't get support. I have to wait until the right department is open tomorrow to fix this.

Hopefully, I can get them to exchange my 3D Vision 1 glasses for 3D vision 2 glasses tomorrow.

I wish you luck. You got a real idiot that time. Try to send them links to show differences between 3d vision on the R3 and 3D Vision2 on the R4. The glasses are very different visually as well as functionality.

Whenever I talk to an AW rep I get his email. Fingers crossed.

Just called them back, got AW to add the order number of the refurb system exchange into the ticket so this is easier to resolve tomorrow. I got a better technician this time and he was able to find another part number for 3D glasses (than the ones that came with my R3 when that original machine was ordered) but is unsure if it is the 3D Vision 2 glasses. However, they are going to send them anyway.

I'll reply to this thread once I get the glasses and test them out/compare to 3D vision 1. Hopefully these are the correct ones!

Great! They will come in a V2 marked box.

Don't expect a quantum leap though, more subtle and less light from surroundings :)
