Hi there,
regarding the alienhead-logo on the lid, i noticed that when you close the display, the logo turns off as well.
now i know what you´re gonna say: dell didn´t install the led-panel which illuminates the logo.
no. they did. its there, and with an open display it works just fine.
since my old R3 didn´t show this behaviour, i wonder whats the problem here.
i´d appreciate it if you could test this with your own R4 and tell me the result, including what panel (3D/non-3D) and bios-version you´re using right now, thanks.

The lid logo is only illuminated by the backlight of the lcd panel. Close the lid and the display goes off and therefore, the lid logo light does too because the screen is no longer on. The logo is only lit up by the backlight of the lcd panel and is not "colour customisable" like it used to be on older models - it remains a constant white/grey colour unfortunately. The only way to get it to stay on with a closed lid would be to change what closing the lid does to "do nothing" ..... rather pointless though....

Actually, the behaviour now is different. In the R3, some laptops came without a alienhead light and therefore the light would dim once the lid was shut, those with the laptops that come with the light had it stay on even when closed. With the new R4 however, even if you do have the installed light, it turns off when you close the lid either way.

Seems like Dell finally made a decision to go "lights out".....which is a shame really. I recall reading a thread a while ago that debated the possibility of adding the logo lighting board and somehow have it linked up to change colours with AlienFX....wonder if anyone ever took it further.....

Oh GOD enough already...stop chasing tails...ha ha ha .....I will put this to rest.
1. I have 3D R4.
2. It has a dedicated lightboard to light up the alienhead. The Alienhead lighting has nothing to do with the backlight of the LED display OK!.
3. When you close the lid or the back light LED display turns off, the software/hardware implementation works in such a way that the Dedicated lightboard also turns off. OK!
There is not other mystery to this. I know this 100% because I have taken it all apart they day it arrived to check. I have the evidence too. So let this confusion stop here before more owners get confused. I cannot speak on behalf of non 3D systems because I have not owned one either in R4 nor in R3.
Next.... for R3s...I previously owned a R3 3D model 580m card. There was an issue where some of the Display Assemblies came with a dedicated lightboard and some had it totally missing. Majority of those who had the dedicated light board were those having 3D R3s. But it was inconsistent. There were some fudging because 2 different companies were producing the Display Assemblies. One implemented the dedicated lightboard and the other didnt. Also it was correlating with the type of Display you had. Different Displays --> different manufacturers ---> received different Display Assemblies hence the mix up.
And those who had this Dedicated lightboard in R3 would know that it works in such a way wherein it would remain lighted up irrespective of whether you close the lid or the backlight of the LED display turns off.
Now in R4 the implementation is different.
Hope this lays this topic to rest. -
to sum it up:
dell/alienware failed once again by deactivating/not implementing the cosmetic/control-feature of leaving the logo illuminated even when the lid is closed...they have some weird engineers working on this machines, thats for sure -.- -

I have a M17x r3 with 3 external displays in eyefinity (VGA x mDP x HDMI).
The Alienware logo is on with the mobile display off but the laptop is open.
The logo turns off when I shut the lid and the computer goes to sleep.
If I use an external keyboard to wake the laptop when the laptop is closed, even though the mobile display stays off, the Alienware head and front facing lights turn on.
