[M17xR4] is it worth it to upgrade now from GTX675M to higher cards?

    Hi guys,

    I have:
    M17x R4: Intel Core i7-3820QM / 256GB Plextor M5 Pro / 1 TB 5400 rpm HDD / 32GB mSATA Cache / 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM(4x4GB) / GTX 675M 2GB / 120Hz / Stealth Black with Soft Touch Finish

I'm looking to upgrade my video card, is it advisable now? What card should be the recommended upgrade? I'm doing this because it's too expensive for me to get a newer laptop, so I was thinking of only upgrading the video card.
Can anyone point me to a seller which ships internationally? I'm located in asia.

Should I get a gtx680m or the newer gtx780m? I'm just a beginner on upgrading so I hope this is just plug-and-play. no soldering needed. LOL.

Will there be a reasonable performance difference if I did an upgrade? I'm looking to play triple-A games on high-ultra settings. :)

    Thanks in advance!

If you can get a 680M for fairly cheap they can offer huge amount of performance stock and tweaked.

680m might be worth it (maybe 10-20% increase maybe more I guess) its the best 'official' upgrade, the 780m will break your 3D. The 680m is essentially plug and play. I'd personally save the money and wait for a next generation or the one after that.

This is true. The 680M will provide a stable 30% boost in performance (give or take 5% depending on the game). When overclocked, you'll see even more output. I'd go with the 680M if you can find one for a decent price. The 780M is a great card, but the 880M is just around the corner. You might as well wait if you want to spend more money.

    Thanks guys for the replies.

Just wanna ask, when you said it's just around the corner does it mean it will come on the first half of 2014? Also is there some sort of assurance that it will be plug&play on my M17xR4, if yes, then I think I can wait, if not, then I think it's better for me to upgrade to GTX680M.

They usually come out during the second quarter of the year (April, May or June). Maxwell was delayed, so I don't think the 880M is going to be Maxwell, but we still don't know. It may be a while before you can get your hands on an 880M, even if they are available in new computers between April and June.

You're probably better off grabbing a 680M, it'll be half the price of the 880M. But if you can find a 780M for a decent price, go for it.

    Missed this thread :(

Only cards sold by dell with the model will be mostly plug-&play, so that's the price you pay when the next technology hits.

680M is a much better value, offering you 80-90% of what a 780M has. 675M is just a rebranded 580M that's slightly overclocked, it'll still play alot of games, but you'll have to start turning stuff down.

Got to agree. The 675 is actually exactly the same as the 580m, clocks, throttle points, voltage, etc. Just a vbios change to report the new number. I've had both.

For turning stuff down, yes I do but mostly those settings that cripple a card with subtle graphic improvements like AO, lower AA, or even drop the res down (1600x900). I cant see any difference myself when I do this. Probably because the games are designed at 720 in the first place?
