    Hi all,

So i've been using AS5 most of the time whenever I change the paste on my last few notebooks.
Recently I keep hearing and seeing this Shin Etsu. I also heard about this MX-3 or something. I'm planning on redoing all of my notebooks.

Shin-Etsu G751 G-751 CPU Thermal Grease Paste 1.2g NEW! - eBay Thermal Compounds, Fans, Heatsinks Cooling, Computer Components, Computers Networking. (end time 04-Sep-10 10:43:39 AEST)

Is it better and recommended? Also is the above link a good place to purchase it or are there better places? PS I'm in the AUS.

I really want to quieten down my CPU fans in each notebook.

    Cheers.

Isn't this card supposed to clock down when it gets too hot?

I received a new 5870 today because the other one became a bit hot @ 110C. This new one is even worse. It gets over 120C within seconds. This thing does 0-100 in 5 seconds

I don't mind modding this myself, but a factory card that gets this hot seems to be a bit ridiculous...

Wholly smokes man 157 degs  WOW  thats NUTs!!!

0 - 100 in 5secs sounds more like a Super car more than GPU lol :D

Yeh give the mod a try and replace thermal paste and stuff. See how it goes I guess. However it could look like you may need another new card after this. WOW that is the highest temp I've even seen before.

The notebook fans must have been insanely loud? or maybe not if they let it get to that temp in the 1st place.
The notebook was still running ey? It didn't auto shutdown or something?

    Cheers.

Yeah, I have the fastest card in the world

The fans maxed out at 4000 RPM. I guess they cannot go any faster, and yes they were very loud. I only ran it for less than thirty seconds as I was afraid it would break or melt.

The notebook is still running, but this is not very comfortable.

And in this case I don't think I will mod it myself. If they replace the card and inspect it, they might blame me for the trouble. I don't want that to happen...

^^ that or just a bad contact.. The mod would definitely help here.

The thing that surprises me most is that it didn't downclock or even shut down completely!

Oh, and that these cards are apparently assembled with very little quality control. What are the odds of getting two cards in a row that get this hot?

    yeah, I know :(

I will probably do the mod instead of asking for another card. Will let you guys know how that goes...

If your system is under warranty, I would just ask for a new card. No reason to do the mod and then burn the card and have dell refuse to exchange the card due to the mod.

Sounds like lack of contact, fan not spinning, or no thermal paste was applied when the card was replaced.

I do agree, but don't feel like testing card after card while the design for the heatsink is obviously not completely sound.

I am considering simply asking Dell for 'permission' to redo the thermal paste. It would save them a card.

Fortunately the thing doesn't overheat while doing my day to day work, and I don't have very much time for games, but still this needs to be resolved...

Tech support wont even know what you are talking about.

Ask them to send a tech out with another GPU, and while he is there explain the situation, and ask to do so yourself under his supervision.

OR, better yet, show him the guide and tell him to do it FOR you.

    i was using AS5 as well until recently. i then tried noctura nt-h1, ocz-freeze, mx2, shin-etsu x23 7783d

    the best i've found is the shin-etsu x23 7783d.

i tried getting a hold of mx3 but they were out of stock and i'm reluctant to make an online order with 40usd shipping just for 1 tube of paste.

to give you an idea how good this is, i'm running around 65C in games with a 5870m... in an m15x! thats stock clocks and slightly undervolted to 1.05. heck, my cpu is now hotter than the gpu... gotta replace that ones as well.

Well... The tech that replaced my card and LCD panel couldn't even get the M17x open. So I'd rather do things myself :D

For now I have work to do, so I'll think about it for another day and decide later.

Oh thanks for the information and input. That's good to know.

I might try and order some. For now though it looks like I will just be using AS5 again still. That's all they seem to sell here in stores. Nothing else, and no one sells thermal pads here either. I ask pc store sales people and they don't even know what I'm talking about so I have to say can I borrow your computer and then show them an online pic LOL. I'll have to order everything online it seems.

    Cheers.

Does anybody know at what temperature the 5870s are supposed to dowclock or even shut down?

I am working with Tech Support, and even though I'm consistently getting temps well over 110C, they don't think the problem is in the card...

tech support reads from a script on their screen, they are not computer people like we are lol

they just have a decision tree and a set of scripts to read depending on what is chosen

I know, but I'm still wondering where the limit is. I thought this card would have downclocked long ago. I can easily get to 130C and not downclock. That doesn't seem right.

Should be in a technical document for the GPU, it should be hardcoded into the GPU core by ATI and irrelevant of board manufacturer

Thanks Mfractal for this awesome guide. The pictures were a big help. I followed this, Ashtefere's guide and the M17x manual and idle temps on my 920XM are 37C-43C. My 5870 temps when I played Fifa 2011 and Just Cause 2 reached around 75C and the most satisfying thing was the fans didn't reach maximum level.

I used MX-3 and EK thermal pads on the 5870 and CPU. The scariest thing for me was opening the control center hinge panel.

    +1 rep

Nice temps chiefs. GPU temps are similar to mine. However wow awesome temps for your CPU. What are the under heavy load CPU temps max out at?

Also sent you a PM to chat about FIFA 11 oles!!! :p ;) :D

    Cheers. :)

The CPU temps max around 65C when I was playing FIFA. I'm not sure how much FIFA stresses the CPU though. Ambient temp in my room is around 20C. I noticed that 3 days after applying the MX-3 paste, the temps have indeed dropped further on both CPU and GPU.

Oh nice nice I see. Ah so it has a break in temp thing as well. Cool. :D :D

Yeh if your FIFA didn't get a boost after your CPU upgrade then I'm guessing its the GPU Drivers that need fixing and added game support for FIFA11. CMON AMD where is the 10.10

What FPS do you run at with FIFA atm?

Oh yeh have you noticed an improvement in other games or other things since your CPU upgrade from the 720QM to the 920XM?

    Cheers. :)

Great post, just completed both cooling mods with great results.
After the CPU cooling mod when I was reassembling and attaching the magnesium cover, i found a loose wire that I did not see before. It terminates near the wifi controller. There is a black wire and white wire that I remember removing, but now I also have a grey wire, but I cannot find where it attaches. It has the same type of end connector as the white/black wires that connect to the wifi. Everything is working as far as I can tell after reassembly. How worried should I be about this? could it touch something and cause a short giving me grief later on?

    Appreciate any helpful answers.

That wire is the third antenna for an Intel 6300 wifi card. If you don't have the 6300, than it goes nowhere ;)
